The E46 325i is the mid-range petrol model in the last truly analogue 3 Series, powered by the 2.5-litre M54B25 inline-six producing 192 hp. This engine is widely regarded as one of the most robust naturally aspirated sixes BMW ever built, with many examples surpassing 300,000 km. At 20+ years old, the main ownership challenges are age-related: cooling system plastics that become brittle, DISA valve wear, VANOS seal degradation, and oil leaks from multiple gasket surfaces.· more· less

Buy if: You want a balanced inline-six BMW with proven durability and can find one with a refreshed cooling system and complete service history.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect the subframe and cooling system before purchase, or need a car that requires no immediate attention to aging components.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age demands proactive maintenance
The M54B25 inline-six is among BMW's most durable engines, with internals that routinely last well beyond 300,000 km. The main ownership costs come from the car's age rather than fundamental design flaws. The cooling system must be maintained proactively to prevent overheating damage, the DISA valve should be inspected preventively, and VANOS seals will almost certainly need attention. A failed CCV system is often the hidden root cause behind cascading oil leaks. Cars with documented cooling system refresh, DISA replacement, and no subframe cracking represent significantly lower risk. Manual gearbox models are more reliable than automatics.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2000-2006 E46 models) Critical - verify completed
Brake light switch failure (2001-2005 models) Verify completed
Rear tail light wiring overheating (2002-2005 sedan models) Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is the most critical and affects nearly all E46 models built between 2000 and 2006. BMW issued a do-not-drive advisory for vehicles with unrepaired Takata airbag inflators, as defective inflators can cause serious injury. Airbag replacement is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E46 325i models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all E46 models
Extended warranty availability Not available from BMW for this age
All E46 325i models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party warranties for cars over 20 years old are rare and typically not cost-effective. Budget for all repairs out of pocket.

Same chassis, diesel engine. No DISA or VANOS concerns, but adds turbo wear and swirl flap risk on M47TU. Shares cooling system and subframe weaknesses.
Audi A4 2.0 B6
Audi A4 2.0 B6 2000-2004
Simpler naturally aspirated engine with fewer specific failure modes. Multitronic CVT on automatics is unreliable. Expensive front suspension wear.
Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor W203
Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor W203 2000-2007
M271 timing chain is a costly known weakness. SAM module electrical problems add another expensive risk. Generally higher repair costs than the E46.
BMW 325i E90
BMW 325i E90 2005-2011
Successor with N52 (reliable) or N53 (expensive fuel system issues). More refined but more complex electronics. Higher parts costs.
BMW 318i E46
BMW 318i E46 1998-2005
Cheaper to buy but uses N42 4-cylinder with Valvetronic and timing chain concerns. The 325i's inline-6 is generally considered more reliable and smoother.
