The 430d is the six-cylinder diesel in the first-generation 4 Series, producing 258 hp and 560 Nm from the N57 inline-six through the ZF 8HP automatic. Available as a coupe (F32), convertible (F33), and Gran Coupe (F36), it offers strong performance with genuine diesel economy. The N57 is widely regarded as a capable long-distance engine, but its oil pump, bottom-end bearings, and EGR cooler demand attention at higher mileages.· more· less

Strong N57 inline-6, high torque ZF 8HP is smooth and reliable
Oil pump/bearing risk at high mileage EGR cooler recall affects all cars
Buy if: You want a powerful diesel grand tourer for regular motorway use and can verify the EGR cooler recall status and full service history with short oil change intervals.
Avoid if: The car has no documented service history, was driven mainly on short urban trips, or shows signs of low oil pressure at idle.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but oil system health and EGR recall are critical checks
The N57 inline-six is widely considered a strong, high-mileage-capable engine, with many examples reaching 300,000+ km without major powertrain issues. However, the oil pump and bottom-end bearings represent the most serious long-term risk, particularly on cars serviced at BMW's extended intervals. The most critical pre-purchase check is confirming the EGR cooler recall has been completed. Beyond that, the steering rack knock and timing chain are the two most common complaints. Cars driven regularly on motorways with oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km fare significantly better than those used for short trips. The ZF 8HP automatic is generally very reliable but benefits from fluid changes every 60,000-80,000 km despite BMW's sealed-for-life claim.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (2014-2017 production, expanded multiple times since 2018) Critical - verify completed
Head airbag inflator weld joint failure (2014-2015 model year F32) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (production until June 2018) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical and has been expanded several times since the initial 2018 campaign. Even if a previous repair was performed, BMW may have extended the recall scope to include additional production runs with an updated cooler from a different supplier.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used 430d F32 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2014+ models until 2026-2032
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F32 430d models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, giving late-production cars three years of coverage, but even those have now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties typically exclude pre-existing conditions like timing chain noise or oil leaks.

Same platform with 4-cylinder diesel. Pre-2015 N47 has catastrophic timing chain risk. Post-2015 B47 avoids the 430d's oil pump and bearing concerns entirely.
Audi A5 B9 2.0 TDI
Audi A5 B9 2.0 TDI 2016-2024
Newer competitor with proven EA288 diesel. AdBlue system failures on early 2016-2018 models are the main concern. No high-mileage bearing risk.
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205 2014-2021
Direct competitor. OM651 diesel has timing chain tensioner issues and expensive NOx sensor failures. Generally higher repair bills than the 430d.
