The middle child of the E30 range, the 320i pairs the silky-smooth M20 inline-six with modest output. Less powerful than the 325i but considerably more refined than the four-cylinder 316i, the 320i was a popular everyday choice across Europe through the 1980s and early 1990s. The M20B20 engine is mechanically robust and proven over decades, with bottom ends routinely exceeding 250,000 km. At 30+ years old, the main ownership challenges are structural rust, cooling system degradation, and age-related electrical wear rather than fundamental engineering weaknesses.· more· less

Buy if: You want a classic inline-six BMW with a balance of simplicity and refinement, and can find one with solid bodywork and a documented cooling system history.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect the car on a lift for structural rust or budget for the ongoing attention a 30+ year old car demands.

Common Problems
Reliable engine in an aging body
The M20B20 engine is one of BMW's most durable designs. The bottom end routinely exceeds 250,000 km with proper maintenance, and the 731 head casting is somewhat more robust than the larger 885 used on the 325i. The real ownership challenges are age-related rather than design-related: structural rust is the primary survival threat, the cooling system must be maintained to protect the cylinder head, and 30+ years of exposure degrades every rubber, plastic, and electrical component on the car. A well-maintained example with solid bodywork, a refreshed cooling system, and documented timing belt history can be a genuinely enjoyable and reasonably reliable classic. Budget for preventive maintenance on purchase rather than waiting for failures.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
No active recalls remain for E30 models from the 1982-1994 production period Not applicable
The BMW E30 is over 30 years old and all original manufacturer recalls have long since expired or been completed. Contact BMW with the VIN for historical recall records if desired. Focus on mechanical condition, rust assessment, and maintenance history rather than recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E30 models (last produced 1994)
Extended warranty Not available for vehicles of this age
Classic car insurance Available from specialist insurers with agreed-value policies
All E30 models are decades past their original factory warranty. Extended warranty products are not available for vehicles of this age. Specialist workshops may offer limited warranties on their own work (typically 6-12 months). Classic car insurance with agreed-value coverage is recommended to protect against total loss from accident or theft.

↔ Also consider

BMW 325i E30
BMW 325i E30 1982-1994
Same platform with the larger M20B25. More power and torque, but the 885 cylinder head is more prone to cracking. Higher fuel consumption and slightly costlier parts.
BMW 320i E36
BMW 320i E36 1990-1999
Direct successor with M50/M52 engines. VANOS and cooling system plastic parts degrade, but the body is better protected against corrosion.
Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor W203
Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor W203 2000-2007
Newer generation competitor. Balance shaft sprocket wear and wheel arch rust are known issues. More modern but less mechanically simple.
BMW 316i E30
BMW 316i E30 1988-1994
Same platform with simpler M40 four-cylinder. Cheaper to buy and run, but the camshaft oil bar design is a documented weak point the M20 avoids.
BMW 320i E46
BMW 320i E46 1998-2005
Two generations newer. M52TU/M54 engines are reliable but cooling system and DISA valve failures add complexity. Far less rust-prone than the E30.
