BMW M5 F90

2018-2024Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2018-2024 · 4.4L S63 V8 twin-turbo (600-625 hp) AWD

The first all-wheel-drive M5, and widely considered the most reliable of the modern M5 generations. The S63TU4 twin-turbo V8 is a mature engine with fewer catastrophic risks than the E60 V10 or F10 V8 predecessors. The M xDrive system and ZF 8-speed deliver remarkable everyday usability combined with supercar acceleration. High running costs come mainly from consumables (large tyres, heavy brake wear) rather than fundamental unreliability.

Most reliable modern M5 generation Mature, well-proven S63 V8 platform
Coolant tank design flaw (recall) High consumable costs (tyres, brakes)
Buy if: You want a 600+ hp daily driver with AWD confidence and can verify the coolant tank and fuel pump recalls are completed.
Avoid if: You cannot budget for high-performance consumable costs or the car has unknown recall status and incomplete service history.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
€1,800 - €3,500/year
15,000 km/year
Fixed costs
€1,200-2,400
Risk buffer
€600-1,100
Common Problems
Most reliable modern M5, but still a complex high-performance car
The F90 M5 is a significant reliability improvement over both the E60 V10 and F10 V8 predecessors. The S63TU4 engine is mature and proven, with most early issues (LPFP, coolant tank) addressed via recalls. Long-term risks are manageable with proper maintenance. The main ownership cost driver is consumables: wide performance tires, aggressive brake wear, and large-capacity oil changes. Budget accordingly for a car that weighs nearly 2 tonnes and produces over 600 hp.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Coolant expansion tank leak risk (2018-2023, produced Nov 2017-Sep 2022) Critical - verify completed
ECU software causing fuel pump stop (2018 models) Verify completed
High-pressure fuel pump flange crack (2019-2020 models) Verify completed
Transmission wiring harness potential short (2018 models) Verify completed
Fuel gauge over-reading (2018 models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The coolant expansion tank recall is particularly critical as unaddressed leaks can cause expensive injector damage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on most used F90 M5s
BMW 2+1 extension (3 years total from Nov 2016) Expired on 2018-2022 models
Extended warranty (BMW Plus) Available through BMW dealers, varies by age/mileage
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all F90 M5s until at least 2030
Most used F90 M5s are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. BMW extended warranty packages are available but exclude wear items and may have mileage restrictions. The coolant tank recall work is performed regardless of warranty status.

↔ Also consider

BMW M5 F10 2011-2016 Previous generation with earlier S63TU. More rod bearing concerns and higher oil consumption. The F90 is considered significantly more reliable. Audi RS7 4.0 TFSI C7 2013-2018 Similar power and luxury. Known for turbo coolant line leaks and carbon buildup. Comparable running costs overall. Audi RS6 Avant C7 2013-2018 Same 4.0 TFSI twin-turbo V8 as RS7. Estate practicality adds appeal but shares similar weak points. BMW M5 V10 E60 2005-2010 Iconic S85 V10 but significantly less reliable. Rod bearing failures, VANOS issues, and SMG gearbox problems make it much riskier. Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 2009-2016 Previous-generation rival. M156/M157 engines are robust but head bolt and wiring harness issues add cost at high mileage.
