The E46 318d is BMW's entry-level diesel from the early 2000s, sharing its M47 engine family with the more powerful 320d but detuned to 115 hp. It was produced in relatively small numbers compared to other E46 variants, making it less common on the used market. The M47 diesel is generally a durable unit, and the 318d benefits from lower stress on its turbo and drivetrain components compared to the 150 hp 320d. At 20+ years old, condition and maintenance history matter far more than mileage.· more· less

Buy if: You want an economical E46 with a robust diesel and can find one with complete service history and confirmed swirl flap status.
Avoid if: You need a car that requires no immediate attention to aging components, or the seller cannot confirm whether swirl flaps have been addressed on a 2003+ model.

Common Problems
Robust diesel engine, but age-related maintenance is unavoidable
The M47 diesel in the 318d is one of the more reliable engines in the E46 range. It has no DPF to worry about, uses a robust timing chain that rarely needs attention before 250,000 km, and operates under less stress than the 320d thanks to its lower output. The main diesel-specific concerns are swirl flap integrity (2003+ models only), turbo health, and EGR buildup. Shared E46 platform issues (cooling system, subframe, window regulators) apply equally. Cars with documented cooling system renewal, confirmed swirl flap status, and regular 10,000-15,000 km oil changes represent the lowest risk.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2000-2006 E46 models) Critical - verify completed
Rear tail light wiring overheating (2002-2005 sedan models) Verify completed
Brake light switch failure (2001-2005 models) Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is the most critical and affects nearly all E46 models built between 2000 and 2006. BMW issued a do-not-drive advisory for affected vehicles with unrepaired Takata airbag inflators. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Do not purchase an E46 with an outstanding Takata airbag recall. Replacement is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E46 318d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all E46 models
Extended warranty availability Not available from BMW for this age
All BMW E46 318d models are well outside any factory or extended warranty coverage. Third-party warranties for cars over 20 years old are rare and typically not cost-effective. Budget for all repairs out of pocket.

Petrol inline-6 alternative. No swirl flap or turbo concerns, but adds DISA valve and VANOS seal issues. Both share cooling system and subframe weaknesses.
Audi A4 1.8T B6
Audi A4 1.8T B6 2000-2004
Different weak points: oil sludge and turbo failure instead of swirl flaps. Multitronic CVT should be avoided. Manual and quattro Tiptronic are more reliable.
BMW 320d E90
BMW 320d E90 2005-2011
Successor generation with N47 engine. Known for timing chain failures that can destroy the engine. The older M47 in the E46 318d avoids this problem entirely.
BMW 318i E46
BMW 318i E46 1998-2005
Same chassis, petrol engine. Pre-facelift M43 is very reliable. Facelift N42 has Valvetronic and timing chain concerns the diesel avoids.
BMW 320d F30
BMW 320d F30 2012-2018
Two generations newer with more power and refinement. Early cars use the problematic N47 engine. Later B47 is more reliable but more complex.
