BMW 325i E30

The M20B25 cylinder head is a known weak point. The '885' casting head is particularly prone to cracking between the coolant passages and cylinders. This typically happens after an overheating event, even a minor one. Cracks usually develop towards the rear of the head. Signs include coolant loss without visible external leak, white exhaust smoke, or milky oil. A replacement or reconditioned head with gasket set, pressure testing, and labor typically costs between €1,000 and €2,500 at a specialist. Prevention is key: maintain the cooling system meticulously, replace the thermostat preventively, and never ignore a rising temperature gauge.

Rust is the single biggest threat to E30 survival. Common areas include: jacking points and sills, rear wheel arches, battery tray (right side), trunk floor, front suspension turrets, door bottoms (blocked drains), and sunroof surround. Cars built before the 1987 facelift had less galvanic protection and rust more aggressively. Even post-1987 cars will have rust after 30+ years in northern European climates. Repair costs range widely: a single arch repair is €300-500, but comprehensive sill and floor work can reach €2,000-4,000. Fuel tanks also rust at the seams. Once structural rust is advanced, repair costs can exceed the car's value.

At 30+ years old, all original rubber cooling components will be degraded. Hoses crack and split, sometimes without visible external signs until they burst. The water pump develops leaks or loses efficiency. The plastic radiator end tanks become brittle. A sudden coolant loss event leads directly to the head cracking issue described above. A complete cooling system overhaul (radiator, all hoses, water pump, thermostat, expansion tank) costs approximately €400-900 in parts and labor at a specialist. Many owners do this preventively on purchase. Silicone hose upgrades are available but require more frequent coolant level checks.

Oil leaks on the M20 are extremely common and almost expected at this age. The most frequent sources are: valve cover gasket (the most accessible repair at €100-200), oil pan gasket (more involved, €300-500 as subframe may need lowering), cam seal, and the oil control valve O-ring on the filter housing. Pre-November 1990 cars had a problematic O-ring material on the oil cooler valve that has since been superseded by Viton. While individual leaks are cheap to fix, chasing multiple leaks simultaneously can add up. A dry M20 at this age would be the exception rather than the rule.

The E30 rear subframe is mounted on two rubber bushings that absorb all suspension and driveline forces. After decades, these crack, shrink, and eventually split, allowing the subframe to move. Symptoms include knocking over bumps, imprecise rear-end behavior, and uneven tire wear. Trailing arm bushings and rear shock mounts also deteriorate. Replacement with OEM rubber or upgraded polyurethane bushings costs €400-800 for parts and labor. If ignored, excessive subframe movement can damage surrounding mounting points, pushing costs to €1,200 or more for welding and reinforcement work.

After 30+ years, electrical connections corrode, insulation becomes brittle, and components fail. The central locking system has two common design flaws accounting for most failures, typically repairable for under €100. Window regulators and motors seize from lack of lubrication. The instrument cluster commonly develops dead pixels or non-functioning gauges. Cracked dashboards are nearly universal and BMW no longer manufactures replacements. Individual repairs are modest, but accumulated electrical issues across the car can total €200-800 depending on how many systems need attention.

The original cast iron exhaust manifold on the M20 is prone to warping over years of thermal cycling. This puts extra strain on the mounting studs, which can snap in the aluminium cylinder head. A broken stud extraction from the head is a delicate and time-consuming job. The manifold face should be checked with a straight edge and ground flat if warped. Stainless steel aftermarket headers are available as a more durable long-term replacement. Total repair cost including manifold replacement or reconditioning and stud extraction runs €300-800.
