BMW 330i G20

2019-present · 2.0L B48 turbocharged inline-4 petrol (258 PS / 245 PS LCI)

The G20 330i is the mid-range petrol in BMW's seventh-generation 3 Series, built on the CLAR platform with the B48 turbocharged four-cylinder producing 258 PS (pre-LCI) or 245 PS with 48V mild hybrid (LCI from 2022). Paired exclusively with the ZF 8-speed automatic, it offers sharp dynamics and a refined cabin. The B48 is a genuine improvement over its N20 predecessor with the timing chain moved to the front of the engine, but plastic cooling components and oil sealing remain the primary ownership concerns.

Proven B48 engine, well-documented Excellent ZF 8HP gearbox reliability
Plastic cooling components fail early Oil filter housing prone to cracking
Buy if: You want a refined, quick premium sedan with a known-quantity engine and can commit to proactive cooling system and oil leak inspections.
Avoid if: You plan to stretch maintenance intervals or cannot budget for the cooling system and oil sealing repairs that are common between 80,000 and 130,000 km.

Common Problems
Well-built overall, but cooling system and oil leaks need proactive monitoring
The G20 330i with the B48 engine is one of BMW's more reliable modern offerings and should comfortably reach 200,000+ km with attentive maintenance. The main ownership concerns are cooling system components (vent line, water pump, thermostat) and oil leaks from the filter housing and valve cover gaskets, all of which are well-documented and predictable. Folding mirror electronics are a G20-specific nuisance that affects many cars regardless of mileage. The B48 eliminated the catastrophic timing chain guide failure that plagued the N20 predecessor, and the ZF 8-speed automatic is very reliable. Keeping oil change intervals sensible (every 10,000-12,000 km rather than BMW's extended schedule) and addressing small leaks early are the keys to trouble-free ownership.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter motor overheating / fire risk (2019-2022 models with B48) Critical - verify completed
Counterbalance shaft loosening (early 2019-2020 models) Critical - verify completed
Seat frame weld defect (2019-2021 models, production Jun 2019-Apr 2021) Verify completed
Seatbelt warning system software (2019-2022 models) Verify completed
Emissions transmission software (2021-2023 models) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The starter motor recall is particularly important as it involves a fire risk even when the car is parked. The counterbalance shaft recall applies to early 2019-2020 production and involves free engine replacement if damage has occurred.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years, 2+1 from Nov 2016) Expired on 2019-2022 models; may remain on 2023+ cars
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still valid on all G20 models
Extended warranty Available through BMW dealers and third parties
BMW offers a 2+1 year factory warranty (3 years total, no km limit) on all G20 models. Most used examples from 2019-2022 are now outside this warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty applies to all G20 models. Pre-purchase, verify whether any remaining manufacturer warranty is transferable. BMW also offers extended warranty packages through dealers.
