Common Problems
Robust diesel engine with complex aftertreatment and twin-turbo system
The B57 twin-turbo inline-six is widely regarded as one of BMW's most reliable modern diesel engines, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km without major powertrain issues. The timing chain is notably robust compared to the N57 it replaced. The main ownership risks center on the turbo wastegate actuator rattle, the diesel emissions system (DPF sensors, AdBlue components), and standard BMW inline-six aging issues like oil leaks and water pump failure. Cars with regular motorway use, complete BMW service history, and documented recall completion represent significantly lower-risk purchases. The ZF 8HP automatic gearbox is generally reliable but benefits from fluid changes every 80,000-100,000 km despite BMW's sealed-for-life claim.

Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The starter motor recall (July 2020 - July 2022 production) is the most critical due to potential fire risk. The EGR cooler recall affecting N47, N57, and B47 engines does not apply to the B57 in the M340d.
Warranty Status

Extended warranty availability BMW extended warranty packages available through dealers
All G20 M340d models benefit from BMW's 2+1 warranty program (3 years total), introduced in November 2016. Most 2020-2022 models are now outside this warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all G20 production. Recall work (such as the starter motor recall) is performed free of charge regardless of warranty status.
