The F01 generation 7 Series brought a significant refinement leap over the E65, with smoother styling, a more intuitive iDrive system, and improved build quality. The 730d pairs the N57 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel with the ZF 8HP automatic, producing 245 hp in pre-LCI form (2008-2012) and 258 hp in the LCI facelift (2012-2015). Heavy depreciation makes flagship comfort accessible, but the combination of air suspension, complex electronics, and diesel emissions equipment means running costs remain firmly at premium level.· more· less

Robust N57 inline-six diesel Exceptional motorway comfort
Air suspension repairs are costly Complex electronics age poorly
Buy if: You want flagship luxury with diesel economy and can find one with complete BMW dealer history, recent air suspension work, and confirmed EGR cooler recall completion.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR issues accelerate) or cannot budget for air suspension and electrical repairs in the four-figure range.

Common Problems
Reliable drivetrain, but flagship complexity drives running costs
The N57 inline-six is one of BMW's most proven diesel engines, with well-maintained examples regularly exceeding 300,000 km. The ZF 8-speed gearbox is equally robust with regular fluid changes every 60,000-80,000 km. The main cost drivers are the air suspension system, diesel emissions equipment (EGR, DPF), and aging electronics. Pre-October 2010 engines carry a moderate timing chain risk. Verify the EGR cooler recall has been completed on any F01 730d. Cars with consistent motorway use and complete BMW dealer service history are significantly more reliable than those used primarily for short urban trips.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak causing fire risk (N57 diesel, multiple production years) Critical - verify completed
Diesel fuel filter heater electrical short circuit (Aug 2009 - Nov 2009 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (applicable to certain production dates) Verify with VIN
The EGR cooler recall is particularly critical due to the fire risk. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. BMW has extended this recall multiple times as prior fixes proved inadequate.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F01 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on pre-2014 models, expiring soon on later cars
Extended warranty Available through BMW dealers (BMW Extended Warranty) and third-party providers
All F01 730d models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Given the complexity of the electronics and suspension, an extended warranty from a reputable provider can be worthwhile if it covers air suspension and electronic modules. Read exclusions carefully.

BMW 750i G11
BMW 750i G11 2015-2022
Newer generation with V8 petrol instead of diesel. Higher running costs from the twin-turbo V8 but a more modern platform with fewer electronics aging issues.
Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC W222
Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC W222 2013-2017
Direct competitor with OM642 V6 diesel. Similar air suspension costs. OM642 has its own oil cooler seal and swirl flap issues comparable to the N57's EGR and turbo concerns.
Audi A8 3.0 TDI D4
Audi A8 3.0 TDI D4 2010-2017
Same segment, same concept. Air suspension and timing chain tensioner are the shared weak points. Audi's EA897 timing chain is rear-mounted (expensive to reach), similar to the N57.
BMW 740i G11
BMW 740i G11 2015-2022
Successor generation with B58 petrol inline-six. More modern electronics and fewer diesel-specific issues. Significantly lower engine repair risk overall.
Volvo S60 D5 P3
Volvo S60 D5 P3 2010-2018
Much cheaper to own with simpler electronics and no air suspension. Less luxury but the D5 five-cylinder is proven durable. Good alternative if budget is a concern.
