The top-of-the-range petrol option in the second-generation X3, pairing BMW's N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with permanent xDrive all-wheel drive and the ZF 8-speed automatic. With 306 hp and 400 Nm, it offers near-luxury-sedan performance in a practical SUV body. The N55 is widely considered one of BMW's more reliable turbocharged sixes, sitting between the problematic N54 it replaced and the acclaimed B58 that followed. Production ran from late 2010 to mid-2017, with a mid-cycle LCI facelift in 2014 bringing minor interior and equipment updates.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable inline-six, but oil leaks and cooling system need attention
The N55 engine in the xDrive35i is one of BMW's more dependable turbocharged units, and many examples exceed 200,000 km with regular maintenance. The primary ownership concerns are multiple oil leak sources (valve cover, oil filter housing gasket) and the electric water pump that can fail without warning. These are well-documented, affordable to address proactively, and well within the capability of independent BMW specialists. The F25 platform adds the common steering rack knock and transfer case actuator wear shared with all xDrive variants. With regular oil changes (10,000-15,000 km rather than BMW's long-life interval), proactive cooling system care, and transfer case fluid changes, the xDrive35i is a rewarding long-term ownership proposition.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Water pump electrical connector fire risk (2011-2017 models) Critical - verify completed
ISOFIX child seat bracket failure (built July 2010 to April 2016) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2011-2017 models, multiple rounds) Verify completed
Driver airbag inflator welding defect (2012-2013 models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The water pump connector recall is particularly important as it addresses a fire risk. The Takata airbag campaign is an ongoing global recall issued in multiple rounds, so even if one round was completed, additional rounds may apply.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used F25 X3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models until 2026-2029
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F25 X3 models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, but only very late-production F25s (2017) would have benefited, and those have also expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions.
