The second-generation BMW X5 with the M57 twin-turbo diesel remains a compelling large luxury SUV. With 286 hp and 580 Nm of torque from its 3.0-litre inline-six, it offers strong performance and respectable fuel economy for its size. The E70 generation refined the X5 formula considerably over the E53, with a more capable chassis and better road manners.· more· less

Common Problems
Durable engine, but complex systems demand proactive maintenance
The M57 twin-turbo diesel is widely regarded as one of BMW's most robust engines, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. However, the E70 platform surrounds this engine with complex systems — air suspension, xDrive transfer case, twin-turbo plumbing, and SCR emissions equipment — that each carry their own maintenance burden. Ownership costs depend heavily on how well these ancillary systems have been maintained by previous owners. A well-documented service history and specialist pre-purchase inspection are essential.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal leak and fire risk (certain diesel models) Critical - verify completed
Front driveshaft universal joint failure (2011-2013 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2007-2013 E70 models) Critical - verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all open recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is particularly important as it relates to fire safety. The Takata airbag recall is critical and must be verified on every E70.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E70 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or expiring on most E70 models
Extended warranty availability Limited availability through BMW dealers for younger E70 models
All BMW X5 E70 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty has expired on 2007-2013 models. Extended warranty options from BMW may still be available for the youngest models (2012-2013) through BMW dealers, but coverage is typically limited and expensive for vehicles of this age.
