BMW's first-generation Z4 paired a sharp-edged Chris Bangle design with the proven M54 inline-six. The 2.5i produces 192 hp from the naturally aspirated M54B25, sending power to the rear wheels through either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. Built from 2003 to 2005 before the facelift introduced the N52-powered 2.5si, the M54 version benefits from a large parts supply and an active owner community. The electric soft top adds convenience but introduces a well-known vulnerability to water ingress.· more· less

Common Problems
Manageable if proactive, but age-related items add up
The M54 inline-six is a proven and durable engine that can reach well over 300,000 km with proper care. However, at 20+ years of age, the Z4 E85 2.5i requires attention to its ageing cooling system plastics, degraded VANOS seals, and the well-known roof motor vulnerability. Most issues are well-documented by the active owner community, and specialist repair options keep costs reasonable. Budget for a comprehensive cooling system refresh and VANOS rebuild if these have not already been done. The roof motor should be inspected and its drain cleared or relocated preventively.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (certain 2003-2008 production vehicles) Verify with VIN
Fuel tank manufacturing specification (early production vehicles) Verify with VIN
The E85 Z4 has relatively few formal recalls compared to newer BMWs. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify whether any outstanding recalls apply to the specific vehicle. The Takata airbag recall affected some but not all Z4 E85 models, so VIN-specific confirmation is essential.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Z4 E85 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Z4 E85 models
Extended warranty availability Generally not available due to vehicle age
All Z4 E85 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party warranty providers may offer limited coverage but typically exclude vehicles older than 15 years. Budget for all repairs as out-of-pocket expenses.
