2012-2019 · 3.0L N57D30O1 inline-6 turbodiesel (258 hp / 560 Nm)

The F30 330d pairs BMW's proven N57 inline-six turbodiesel with a lighter, stiffer chassis and the excellent ZF 8HP automatic gearbox. With 258 hp and 560 Nm, it offers genuine sports sedan performance combined with 5-6 l/100 km diesel economy on the motorway. The N57 is widely regarded as a strong, long-lived engine when properly maintained, though it does require more attention than the legendary M57 it replaced.

Robust N57 inline-6, high mileage capable ZF 8HP gearbox is smooth and reliable
EGR cooler recall (fire risk) Electric steering rack failures
Buy if: You want a powerful, refined diesel sport sedan with proven mechanicals and can verify the EGR cooler recall has been completed.
Avoid if: You mainly do short urban trips (DPF clogging), or cannot budget for potential steering rack or timing chain repairs.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but verify EGR recall and steering rack condition
The N57 inline-six is widely considered a strong, high-mileage-capable engine, with many examples reaching 300,000+ km without major powertrain issues. The most critical check before purchase is confirming the EGR cooler recall has been completed, as this addresses a genuine fire risk. Beyond that, the electric steering rack and timing chain are the two most expensive potential failures. Cars driven regularly on motorways with oil changes every 15,000 km (rather than BMW's extended 25,000 km interval) fare significantly better. The ZF 8HP automatic gearbox is generally reliable but benefits from fluid changes every 80,000-100,000 km despite BMW's sealed-for-life claim.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal leak with fire risk (2012-2017 N57 diesel models) - multiple recall expansions Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (selected 2012-2015 production dates) Verify completed
Battery cable connector (selected 2013-2016 production, potential loss of electrical power) Verify completed
The EGR cooler recall is critical and has been expanded multiple times. BMW acknowledged that earlier corrective actions were insufficient, so even cars that had an initial recall repair may need the updated fix. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify the latest recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most F30 330d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still valid on 2014+ models until 2026-2031
Extended warranty availability BMW extended warranty or third-party available for newer examples
Most F30 330d models are outside their original factory warranty. Cars registered from November 2016 onward received a 3-year warranty (2+1 programme). The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to later production cars. EGR cooler recall work is free regardless of warranty status.

↔ Also consider

BMW 330d E90 2005-2012 Previous generation with M57N2/N57 engines. Simpler electronics and cheaper parts, but swirl flap risk on pre-LCI and more age-related oil leaks. Audi A4 3.0 TDI B8 2008-2015 Comparable V6 diesel power. Rear-mounted timing chain and S-tronic mechatronics are the key risk areas. Higher overall complexity. Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014 Less powerful 4-cylinder diesel competitor. Electronic steering lock failures and rear subframe corrosion are the main concerns. BMW 330d E46 1999-2005 Two generations older with the legendary M57. Much simpler and cheaper to maintain, but exhaust manifold cracking and cooling system decay are widespread. Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8 2008-2015 Less powerful but proven 4-cylinder diesel. Lower risk profile overall with cheaper parts, though intake manifold flap failures are common.
