The fastest non-M variant in the G05 X5 lineup, powered by the N63TU3 twin-turbo V8 producing 530 hp. The third-generation N63 addressed many of the original engine's shortcomings with improved thermal management, arc-wire-sprayed cylinder bores, and S63-derived connecting rods. It remains a complex powertrain in a heavy SUV platform, and the combination of standard air suspension, xDrive transfer case, and hot-vee V8 architecture creates multiple potential failure points as mileage accumulates.· more· less

Common Problems
Capable V8 SUV with several expensive potential failure modes
The N63TU3 is meaningfully improved over earlier N63 versions, with better thermal management, stronger internals, and a solid track record through the first 80,000 km. Beyond that point, the hot-vee V8 architecture, standard air suspension, and xDrive transfer case all present potential repair costs in the four-figure range. The transfer case shudder issue is the subject of an active class-action lawsuit and affects a significant number of G05 vehicles. Air suspension components have a finite service life and should be inspected carefully. Complete BMW service history and verified recall completion (particularly the Integrated Brake recall on 2022-2024 cars and the HPFP recall on 2019-2020 cars) are essential when purchasing. Cars maintained at shorter oil change intervals (10,000 km vs. 15,000-20,000 km) tend to have lower oil consumption and fewer seal-related issues.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Integrated Brake (IB) module signal disruption (2022-2024 production) Critical - verify completed
High-pressure fuel pump flange attachment (2019-2020 production, recall 19V-513) Critical - verify completed
Starter motor overheating risk (September 2018 - May 2020 production) Verify completed
Steering rack pinion teeth fracture (specific August 2019 production window) Verify completed
Sunroof control unit incorrect programming (2019-2022 production) Verify completed
Rearview camera display settings retention (2019-2020 production) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Integrated Brake recall on 2022-2024 models and the HPFP recall on 2019-2020 models are critical safety items that must be confirmed before purchase. The starter motor recall also involves a fire risk and should be verified on early-production cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, EU) Expired on all G05 M50i models
BMW Premium Selection / Extended warranty Often available 12-24 months from BMW dealers
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still valid on most G05 X5 models
All G05 X5 M50i models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Given the V8's potential repair costs, an extended warranty through BMW Premium Selection or a reputable third-party provider is strongly recommended. Verify whether any previous warranty claims were made for transfer case or brake system issues, as these indicate known problems were already present.
