The entry-level diesel in the F30 3 Series, the 318d uses a detuned version of the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder found in the 320d. Pre-LCI models (2012-2015) use the N47 engine producing 143 hp, while the 2015 facelift introduced the B47 with 150 hp. The engine distinction matters enormously: the N47 has its timing chain at the rear, while the B47 relocated it to the front. Both share the EGR cooler fire-risk recall, which must be verified before any purchase.· more· less

Excellent fuel economy (4.0-5.5 l/100 km) B47 engine is well proven and durable
N47 timing chain risk (pre-2015) EGR cooler recall affects all cars
Buy if: You want an efficient diesel sedan and can find a post-2015 B47 model with complete service history, or a pre-2015 car with documented short oil change intervals and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has cold-start chain rattle, unknown service history, or was primarily used for short urban trips without regular highway driving.

Common Problems
Engine generation is the key factor for reliability
The BMW 318d F30 spans two very different reliability profiles. Pre-2015 models with the N47 engine carry the well-documented timing chain risk, while post-2015 LCI models with the B47 engine are significantly more reliable, with the chain relocated to the front. The 318d's lower power tune (143/150 hp) places less stress on components than the 320d, but the fundamental design weaknesses of each engine remain the same. Both engines share the EGR cooler fire-risk recall (verify completion before purchase), DPF sensitivity to short trips, and the common F30 steering rack knocking. With proper maintenance and regular highway driving, the B47 318d is a dependable and economical long-distance car.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (2012-2018 diesel models, expanded multiple times since 2018) Critical - verify completed
Head airbag inflator weld joint failure (2014 model year F30) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Electronic power steering control unit fire risk (selected 2015-2016 models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical and has been expanded several times. Even if a previous repair was done, BMW may have since extended the recall scope to include additional production runs. The Takata airbag campaign is an ongoing global recall.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used F30 318d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2014+ models until 2026-2031
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F30 318d models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, giving late-production cars (2017-2019) three years of coverage, but even those have now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions like timing chain noise or DPF issues.

↔ Also consider

BMW 320d F30
BMW 320d F30 2012-2019
Same N47/B47 engine family but higher tune (184-190 hp). Identical reliability profile. Higher stress may accelerate timing chain wear on the N47.
Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8
Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8 2008-2015
EA189/EA288 diesel is generally more reliable with no catastrophic timing chain risk. Multitronic CVT is the weak point on automatic variants.
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205 2014-2021
More refined interior but higher repair costs. OM651 has its own timing chain issues. NOx sensor failures are widespread and expensive.
BMW 320d E90
BMW 320d E90 2005-2011
Previous generation with N47 engine from 2007. Identical timing chain risk but older platform. Generally cheaper to buy but potentially more expensive to maintain.
Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI 2014-2023
More spacious alternative with robust EA288 engine. AdBlue system failures are the main headache. DPF and EGR need highway driving.
