BMW's flagship electric SUV, built on a dedicated EV platform with a carbon fiber-reinforced passenger cell and aluminum spaceframe. The xDrive40 uses the 5th generation eDrive system with dual motors producing 326 hp and a 76.6 kWh usable battery for around 370-420 km of real-world range. Available with optional air suspension and rear-wheel steering, it sits above the iX3 in BMW's EV lineup. A mid-cycle update in early 2025 brought revised styling and a new xDrive45 variant.· more· less

Common Problems
Software-heavy early issues, solid hardware fundamentals
The iX xDrive40 has proven hardware fundamentals (5th gen eDrive motors and battery show minimal degradation), but its complexity and early production recall history require careful pre-purchase verification. Most serious issues (drive motor shutdown, battery cell monitoring, steering gear) are addressed via recalls and service actions at no cost if completed. The main ongoing ownership risks are 12V battery drain, software glitches, and expensive repairs if the optional air suspension or heat pump fails outside warranty. Cars built from late 2023 onward generally have fewer issues due to production refinements and software maturity.
