BMW 118d E87

2004-2011Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2004-2011 · 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel M47 (122 hp, 2004-2007) / N47 (143 hp, 2007-2011)

BMW's first compact hatchback brought rear-wheel drive and diesel efficiency to a smaller footprint. The 118d E87 became one of Europe's most popular premium diesel commuters. The critical distinction is the engine: pre-facelift cars (2004-2007) use the robust M47 with no DPF, while the facelift (2007-2011) switched to the N47 with its well-documented timing chain concerns.

Excellent fuel economy (4-5 L/100km) Engaging rear-wheel-drive handling
N47 timing chain risk (2007-2011) Rear subframe corrosion on older cars
Buy if: You want an efficient diesel with rear-wheel-drive fun and can either find a pre-2007 M47 model or a well-maintained N47 with chain already replaced.
Avoid if: You only drive short urban trips (DPF clogging on N47 models) or are considering a 2007-2009 N47 with unknown chain history.

Common Problems
Engine choice is the defining factor for reliability
The BMW 118d E87's reliability hinges primarily on which engine is fitted. Pre-2007 M47 models are significantly more reliable: no DPF, no timing chain problems, and a simpler turbo setup. The N47 (2007-2011) adds the well-documented timing chain risk and DPF concerns, though post-2009 production cars are improved. Both variants share swirl flap, EGR, clutch/DMF wear, and rear subframe corrosion concerns. With diligent maintenance, shorter oil change intervals, and preventive swirl flap blanking, both can deliver reliable high-mileage service.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak / fire risk (N47 diesel models, 2007-2011) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2006-2008 production models) Verify completed
Fuel filter heater wiring (certain diesel models) Verify completed
The EGR cooler recall is the most critical — it affects fire safety and applies to all N47-powered 118d models (2007-2011). Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Pre-2007 M47 models are not affected by the EGR cooler recall but should still be checked for the Takata airbag recall.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E87 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all E87 models
All BMW 118d E87 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. No extended warranty programs remain available from BMW for this generation. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude known problem areas.

BMW 320d E46 1998-2005 Same M47 engine in a larger car. Similar reliability profile on the diesel side, with added rust concerns on the E46 body. BMW 120d F20 2011-2019 More powerful successor. Same N47/B47 engine at higher tune. Identical reliability issues but better equipped. BMW 316i E90 2005-2012 Same-era BMW with petrol engine. Avoids all diesel-specific issues but N43/N46 engines have their own VANOS problems. BMW 116d F20 2011-2019 Lower-powered successor with N47D16/B37 engine. Identical diesel issues but detuned for slightly less stress on components.
