The entry-level NC pairs Mazda's 1.8-litre MZR four-cylinder with a 5-speed manual gearbox. With 126 hp it is the lighter, simpler alternative to the 2.0 Sport, lacking variable valve timing, a limited-slip differential, and the sixth gear. Three sub-generations exist: NC1 (2005-2008), the improved NC2 (2009-2012), and the final NC3 (2013-2015). The engine shares the MZR/Duratec architecture with the 2.0 and is generally robust, but NC1 cars carry the same oil consumption and big end bearing risk as their 2.0 counterparts.· more· less

NC1 big end bearing vulnerability Rear sill and wheel arch corrosion
Buy if: You want an affordable, engaging roadster and can find an NC2 or NC3 with clean sills and documented oil change history.
Avoid if: You are looking at an NC1 with unknown service history, or the car has visible paint bubbling on the rear sills.

Common Problems
Reliable roadster when maintained, but NC1 oil habits and rust need attention
The NC 1.8 is fundamentally a robust car with a simple, proven engine and cheap parts. The NC2 and NC3 (2009-2015) are significantly better than the NC1 thanks to improved engine internals and better corrosion protection. The biggest risks are oil consumption leading to bearing failure on NC1 models (preventable with frequent oil checks and regular spirited driving) and structural rust in the rear sills. A well-maintained NC2 or NC3 1.8 with clean sills is one of the lowest-risk sports car purchases available.

Power steering hose chafing (selected early NC1 production) Verify with VIN
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2005-2015 production, depending on market) Verify with VIN
The NC MX-5 had remarkably few safety recalls. Contact Mazda with the VIN to verify whether any applicable recalls have been completed. European models can be checked through the Mazda Europe recall portal at mazda.eu.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all NC models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all NC models
Extended warranty Not available for vehicles this age
All Mazda MX-5 NC models are well outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. No manufacturer or third-party extended warranties are typically available for vehicles of this age. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential, with particular focus on oil consumption, sill condition, and differential noise.

↔ Also consider

Mazda MX-5 2.0 NC
Mazda MX-5 2.0 NC 2005-2015
Same platform with more power, 6-speed gearbox, and available LSD. Slightly higher oil starvation risk due to greater thermal load. NC2 2.0 gained an oil cooler the 1.8 never received.
Toyota GT86 ZN6
Toyota GT86 ZN6 2012-2021
More powerful coupe with similar running costs. Oil leaks from timing cover and throwout bearing noise are common. No soft top concerns, but more expensive to buy.
Fiat 124 Spider 1.4 MultiAir Turbo
Fiat 124 Spider 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 2016-2019
NC platform successor with turbocharged Fiat engine. More torque but MultiAir system is oil-sensitive and turbo adds complexity. Higher parts costs than the Mazda engine.
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB 1998-2005
Previous generation with the BP engine. Requires timing belt changes the NC avoids, but the engine does not have the oil starvation issue. More rust-prone overall.
Mazda MX-5 1.5 Skyactiv-G ND
Mazda MX-5 1.5 Skyactiv-G ND 2015-present
Current generation, lighter and more efficient. Skyactiv engine is very reliable with no oil starvation concerns. Significantly more expensive to buy.
