2001-2006 · 3.0L M57 inline-6 turbodiesel (184-218 hp)
The original BMW X5 combined sports-car handling with SUV versatility, and the 3.0d diesel remains the most popular used variant. The M57 inline-six diesel is widely regarded as one of BMW's strongest engines and regularly exceeds 300,000 km with proper maintenance. The E53 is mechanically simpler than its E70 and F15 successors: most models have no DPF, conventional rear coil springs rather than air suspension, and fewer electronic modules. The main ownership risks centre on the GM-sourced automatic gearbox, the transfer case actuator, and age-related cooling system and electrical deterioration.· more· less
