The original BMW X5 combined sports-car handling with SUV versatility, and the 3.0d diesel remains the most popular used variant. The M57 inline-six diesel is widely regarded as one of BMW's strongest engines and regularly exceeds 300,000 km with proper maintenance. The E53 is mechanically simpler than its E70 and F15 successors: most models have no DPF, conventional rear coil springs rather than air suspension, and fewer electronic modules. The main ownership risks centre on the GM-sourced automatic gearbox, the transfer case actuator, and age-related cooling system and electrical deterioration.· more· less

Common Problems
Strong engine, but gearbox and age demand attention
The M57 diesel engine is one of BMW's most durable powerplants. With regular oil changes and a maintained cooling system, it commonly reaches 300,000 km and beyond. The main financial risks are the GM 5L40E automatic gearbox (avoid cars with no fluid change history), the transfer case actuator (cheap if caught early, expensive if ignored), and the accumulation of age-related electrical and cooling system repairs. A manual gearbox E53 eliminates the single biggest risk item. Well-maintained examples can be genuinely affordable to run, but neglected ones accumulate problems quickly.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column spindle coupling (1999-2001 production) Verify completed
Lower steering rack input shaft separation (1999-2000 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2000-2001 models) Critical - verify completed
Due to the age of E53 models, recall records may be incomplete. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recall work has been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical for 2000-2001 models as the inflator can rupture during deployment.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E53 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all E53 models
Extended warranty availability Generally not available due to age
All E53 X5 models are well beyond any original or extended warranty coverage. Budget for all repairs as out-of-pocket expenses. Third-party breakdown cover may still be available but will typically exclude pre-existing conditions and wear items.

Toyota Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D J150
Toyota Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D J150 2009-2015
More robust drivetrain and better off-road ability. Pre-2014 models have a piston cracking risk. Higher purchase price and heavier on fuel.
BMW X5 xDrive30d F15
BMW X5 xDrive30d F15 2013-2018
Third-generation X5 with N57 engine and ZF 8-speed. More refined but more complex. EGR cooler fire risk recall is critical to verify.
Audi Q7 4.2 TDI 4L
Audi Q7 4.2 TDI 4L 2007-2012
V8 diesel with massive torque but much higher running costs. Rear-mounted timing chains and air suspension failures make it significantly more expensive to maintain.
