BMW's second-generation compact SUV paired with the turbocharged N20 four-cylinder. Comfortable, well-equipped, and more refined than the E83 predecessor. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system and ZF 8-speed automatic make it a strong long-distance cruiser, though the N20 engine carries a well-documented timing chain risk on pre-2015 cars that prospective buyers should take seriously.· more· less

Common Problems
Timing chain is the headline risk, but oil leaks are the most frequent issue
The N20 engine in the F25 xDrive20i is reasonably capable but has well-documented weak points. The timing chain guide issue (primarily affecting 2011-2014 cars) is the most serious concern — if it fails, engine damage is likely. Post-2015 LCI models received improved chain guides and are considerably less prone to this failure. Oil leaks from the filter housing and valve cover gaskets are very common by 100,000 km but are manageable repairs. The ZF 8HP transmission is generally reliable with proper fluid changes. The xDrive system adds an extra maintenance item (transfer case fluid) and a small risk of actuator failure. Overall, a well-maintained post-LCI xDrive20i can be a dependable ownership experience, while pre-2015 cars warrant careful inspection of the timing chain before purchase.
