2007-2013 · 3.0L inline-6 diesel (235-245 hp) M57/N57 turbocharged

The second-generation X5 established itself as the benchmark luxury diesel SUV in Europe. The inline-6 diesel engine (M57 in pre-LCI, N57 in LCI models) is fundamentally strong and capable of exceeding 300,000 km with proper maintenance. However, the surrounding systems demand attention: the xDrive transfer case, DPF, EGR, swirl flaps (M57), and optional air suspension all have documented failure modes that can result in significant repair bills.

Robust inline-6 diesel engine Strong towing and motorway capability
Transfer case and xDrive repairs Numerous age-related gasket leaks
Buy if: You want a capable diesel SUV for long-distance use and can find one with complete BMW specialist service history and recently replaced wear items.
Avoid if: You primarily drive short urban trips (DPF clogging), cannot verify transfer case service history, or want low-maintenance ownership.

Common Problems
Strong diesel engine, but age and complexity drive repair costs
The M57 and N57 inline-6 diesel engines are fundamentally robust and can reach very high mileage. However, the E70 X5 is a complex vehicle with air suspension, xDrive, and multiple emission control systems that all require attention as the car ages. Transfer case maintenance is critical and often overlooked. Most E70 X5s on the market are now 12-18 years old, meaning rubber seals, gaskets, and electronic components are at the end of their natural lifespan. A well-maintained example with documented service history can still be a rewarding ownership proposition, but budget accordingly for predictable age-related repairs.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2007-2013 models, driver and passenger) Critical - verify completed with VIN
Electronic water pump connector (select 2007-2010 models) Verify completed
Crankcase ventilation heater fire risk (select 2007-2010 diesel models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important as it affects all E70 X5 models and BMW has issued multiple rounds of this recall. Do not drive the car if the Takata recall has not been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E70 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on 2007-2013 models
Extended warranty options Limited third-party options for cars this age
All E70 X5 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Third-party extended warranties for cars of this age typically exclude pre-existing conditions and have high deductibles. Budget for repairs out of pocket.
