BMW X5 E70 xDrive30d
2007-2013Last updated: March 2026
2007-2013 · 3.0L inline-6 diesel (235-245 hp) M57/N57 turbocharged
The second-generation X5 established itself as the benchmark luxury diesel SUV in Europe. The inline-6 diesel engine (M57 in pre-LCI, N57 in LCI models) is fundamentally strong and capable of exceeding 300,000 km with proper maintenance. However, the surrounding systems demand attention: the xDrive transfer case, DPF, EGR, swirl flaps (M57), and optional air suspension all have documented failure modes that can result in significant repair bills.

Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
Known Issues most common first
Plastic actuator gear wears out; clutch pack degrades from mismatched tires or old fluid · more· less
The ATC700 transfer case in the E70 X5 uses a small plastic actuator gear that wears out over time, causing shuddering, jerking when turning, and drivetrain warning messages. The clutch pack inside also degrades, especially if tires are mismatched or the transfer case fluid has never been changed. A simple actuator gear replacement can be done for around 800-1,200 euros at an independent specialist. However, if the internal clutch pack is damaged, a full transfer case rebuild or replacement runs 2,500-3,500 euros. Preventive maintenance includes changing the transfer case fluid every 60,000 km and always running matched tires on all four wheels.
Diesel particulate filter blocks from short trips, causing limp mode and check engine light · more· less
The DPF in the E70 xDrive30d requires sustained driving above 60 km/h for active regeneration to burn off accumulated soot. Cars used predominantly for short urban trips will eventually clog the DPF. Symptoms include loss of power, limp mode, and the check engine light. A DPF cleaning service costs around 400-800 euros. If the filter is beyond saving, replacement costs 1,500-4,000 euros depending on whether an OEM or aftermarket unit is used. The OEM DPF from BMW is expensive (around 3,000-4,000 euros) and sometimes has long lead times. Regular motorway driving of 30+ minutes at least once a week significantly reduces the risk.
Intake manifold swirl flaps can break and fall into engine, causing catastrophic damage · more· less
Pre-LCI models (2007-2009) with the M57 engine have 33mm swirl flaps in the intake manifold that can fracture over time. If the broken flap falls into the cylinders, it causes catastrophic damage to pistons, valves, and cylinder walls, potentially destroying the engine. BMW addressed this on later production runs, but early M57N2 engines remain at risk. Preventive removal with blanking plugs costs 300-500 euros and is strongly recommended. If the engine is damaged, repair costs can reach 5,000 euros or more for a rebuild. Check whether swirl flaps have already been removed or replaced with blanking plugs. This issue does not affect LCI models with the N57 engine.
EGR valve sticks from carbon buildup, cooler can crack causing coolant loss · more· less
The exhaust gas recirculation valve is prone to carbon buildup, especially on cars that mostly do city driving. A stuck EGR valve causes rough idle, loss of power, and increased emissions. The EGR cooler can also develop internal cracks, allowing coolant to enter the exhaust system. EGR valve replacement alone costs around 600-900 euros. If the cooler also needs replacement, total costs reach 1,200-1,800 euros at an independent specialist. EGR cleaning can extend the component's life but is not a permanent solution. Regular Italian-tune-up driving (sustained high-RPM motorway runs) helps prevent buildup.
Gasket hardens with age and heat, leaking oil onto the serpentine belt and engine components · more· less
This is one of the most common issues on E70 X5 diesel engines. The oil filter housing gasket hardens over time due to heat exposure and begins leaking. If ignored, oil can drip onto the serpentine belt, causing it to slip off pulleys and potentially get pulled into the front main seal. This turns a simple gasket replacement into a much more expensive repair. The gasket itself costs under 30 euros, but labor is 2-4 hours due to accessibility. Total repair cost at an independent shop is typically 400-600 euros, or 700-1,000 euros at a BMW dealer. On cars over 10 years old, this leak should be considered expected.
Air springs develop leaks after 8-12 years; compressor burns out from overworking · more· less
E70 X5 models equipped with rear air suspension (not all have it - check the options) will eventually experience air spring leaks or compressor failure. The rubber bellows develop cracks from age and UV exposure, causing the rear to sag overnight or when parked for extended periods. The compressor then works overtime to compensate, eventually burning out. Aftermarket air springs cost around 150-300 euros per side. A new compressor costs 400-700 euros. Total replacement of both springs and compressor runs 800-1,500 euros at an independent specialist, or up to 2,500 euros at a BMW dealer. Some owners convert to conventional coil springs for around 600-800 euros to eliminate the issue permanently.
Rear-mounted timing chain can stretch on high-mileage N57 engines, requiring engine-out repair · more· less
The N57 engine in LCI models (2010-2013) has its timing chain at the rear of the engine, which means the transmission must be removed for replacement. While the failure rate is lower than the infamous N47, timing chain stretch does occur, particularly on cars exceeding 200,000 km with poor oil change history. Symptoms include a rattle from the rear of the engine on cold start and rough idle. The repair itself costs 2,000-2,500 euros at an independent specialist or 3,000-4,000 euros at a BMW dealer, due to the extensive labor involved. The M57 engine in pre-LCI models has its timing chain at the front, making it cheaper and easier to replace, but failures are also less common.
Turbo actuator sticks or turbo bearings wear, causing loss of power and smoke · more· less
The turbocharger on both M57 and N57 engines can fail due to actuator wear, bearing degradation, or oil seal failure. Symptoms include loss of boost, excessive exhaust smoke, and whining noises from the turbo. The actuator alone can sometimes be repaired for 400-600 euros. However, if the turbo itself needs replacement, costs are 1,500-2,500 euros at an independent specialist using a remanufactured unit, or up to 3,500 euros with a new OEM turbo at a BMW dealer. The M57 twin-turbo models (3.0sd/xDrive35d) are more expensive to repair. Ensuring regular oil changes with correct specification oil and allowing the turbo to cool down before switching off after hard driving helps prolong turbo life.
Butyl tape seal degrades, allowing water into tail light housings and corroding electronics · more· less
The rear lights mounted on the tailgate use a butyl tape seal that fails over time, allowing water to enter the light housing. This corrodes the LED circuit board, causing individual LEDs or the entire light to stop working. BMW acknowledged the issue and released updated rubber gaskets (part numbers 63 21 7 288 973 and 63 21 7 288 974) but did not issue a formal recall. The updated seals cost around 20-30 euros and can be installed in about an hour. If the light unit itself is damaged by water corrosion, a new tail light assembly costs 300-600 euros. This is a nearly universal issue on pre-2010 E70s that have not had the seal updated.
Electric water pump fails without warning, risking engine overheating · more· less
The E70 uses an electric water pump that can fail suddenly, with no gradual warning signs. When it fails, the engine overheats quickly, potentially causing head gasket or warping damage if not caught immediately. The water pump typically lasts 80,000-120,000 km. Replacement including a new thermostat (recommended to do both at the same time) costs 600-800 euros at an independent shop or 900-1,200 euros at a BMW dealer. The pump itself costs around 250-400 euros as a part. Preventive replacement around 100,000 km is recommended by many specialists.
Strong diesel engine, but age and complexity drive repair costs
The M57 and N57 inline-6 diesel engines are fundamentally robust and can reach very high mileage. However, the E70 X5 is a complex vehicle with air suspension, xDrive, and multiple emission control systems that all require attention as the car ages. Transfer case maintenance is critical and often overlooked. Most E70 X5s on the market are now 12-18 years old, meaning rubber seals, gaskets, and electronic components are at the end of their natural lifespan. A well-maintained example with documented service history can still be a rewarding ownership proposition, but budget accordingly for predictable age-related repairs.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete BMW dealer or specialist records essential. Verify oil change intervals (should be every 15,000 km or annually, not BMW's longer recommendation).
-
Cold start
Start the engine completely cold. Listen for timing chain rattle (N57 LCI) or rough idle.
-
Test drive
Minimum 30 minutes including motorway speeds. Check for drivetrain shudder, smoke, and warning lights.
-
Tire condition
All four tires must be the same brand, size, and similar tread depth. Mismatched tires destroy the transfer case.
-
Check for transfer case judder when turning
Drive slowly in a tight circle. Shuddering or binding indicates transfer case clutch pack wear. This is a potentially expensive repair.
-
Inspect oil filter housing for leaks
Look for oil seepage around the oil filter housing area. Wet or oily residue indicates the gasket needs replacement. Check if oil has reached the serpentine belt.
-
Check tailgate light operation
Verify all LEDs in both tailgate-mounted lights work. Look for condensation inside the housings. Ask if the updated rubber seals have been fitted.
