The 740e pairs BMW's B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an 83 kW electric motor in the ZF 8-speed automatic, delivering 326 hp combined in a full-size luxury sedan. The 9.2 kWh battery provides roughly 30-40 km of real-world electric range. Produced only during the pre-LCI G11 era (2016-2019) before being replaced by the inline-six 745e, the 740e offered a tax-efficient entry into the 7 Series for company car drivers. Standard air suspension, extensive electronics, and PHEV complexity mean ownership costs remain decidedly premium despite the smaller engine.· more· less

Buy if: You charge daily, value electric urban driving in a flagship sedan, and can budget for BMW specialist maintenance when hybrid components need attention.
Avoid if: You rarely charge, need predictable running costs, or the car has no documented battery health history and is outside the 8-year HV battery warranty.

Common Problems
PHEV complexity on top of flagship electronics
The 740e combines a proven but maintenance-conscious B48 engine with hybrid-specific components (KLE charger, HV battery, SME/EME modules) and mandatory air suspension. The B48 itself is reliable when maintained, but the oil filter housing and cooling system need monitoring after 80,000 km. The biggest financial risks come from the KLE charging module and air suspension, both of which fail frequently enough to warrant budgeting for. Cars that have been regularly plugged in and properly maintained tend to fare well; those left on dealer lots uncharged for months typically show accelerated battery degradation.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter motor magnetic switch overheating and fire risk (July 2020-July 2022 production) Critical - verify completed
High-voltage battery cell contamination fire risk (Samsung SDI, selected 2020-2021 production) Critical - verify completed
Crankshaft sensor incorrect firmware causing stalling (2018-2019 models) Verify completed
Engine oil cooler line incorrect installation causing oil leaks (2017-2018 models) Verify completed
Rearview camera display settings non-compliance (2019-2020 models) Verify completed
TurboCord portable charger capacitor failure (supplied with 2018-2019 740Le) Verify if applicable
The 740e has multiple safety recalls spanning its production run. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The starter motor fire risk and high-voltage battery contamination recalls are particularly critical and must be confirmed before any purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 740e models
High-voltage battery (8 years / 160,000 km) May still apply on 2018-2019 cars until 2026-2027
Air suspension extended coverage 8 years / 130,000 km in some markets; verify with BMW
Rust perforation (12 years) Active on most 740e models
All 740e models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 8-year HV battery warranty with 70% capacity guarantee may still be active on later production cars (2018-2019). Verify remaining battery warranty coverage before purchase, as the HV battery is the single most expensive component on this car.
