The B47 engine (from late 2014) relocated the chain to the front and is far less prone to this failure. Engine variant determines the risk profile

The BMW 525d F10 is fundamentally two different cars. The more common post-2011 models with the N47 four-cylinder add the significant timing chain risk that made this engine family notorious. The B47 replacement (from late 2014) addresses the worst timing chain concerns.
