The F10 525d is a popular executive diesel that bridged two engine families during its 2010-2017 production run. Early cars (2010-2011) use the N57 inline-six shared with the 530d, while from late 2011 onwards BMW fitted the N47 (later B47) four-cylinder twin-turbo to achieve similar output from less displacement. Which engine is under the bonnet fundamentally changes the ownership experience and risk profile.· more· less

Refined ride and cabin quality Strong torque with good fuel economy
N47 timing chain risk (2011-2014) Complex emissions systems prone to faults
Buy if: You can identify the exact engine variant, verify timing chain health on N47 models, and find one with complete service history showing regular oil changes.
Avoid if: You cannot confirm which engine is fitted, see gaps in service history, or primarily drive short urban trips that clog DPF and EGR systems.

Common Problems
Engine variant determines the risk profile
The BMW 525d F10 is fundamentally two different cars. Early models (2010-2011) with the N57 inline-six share the robust character of the 530d, with the main concerns being EGR cooler recall compliance and typical diesel emissions system maintenance. The more common post-2011 models with the N47 four-cylinder add the significant timing chain risk that made this engine family notorious. The B47 replacement (from late 2014) addresses the worst timing chain concerns. Regardless of engine variant, the EGR cooler fire recall must be verified as completed, and regular motorway driving is essential to keep the DPF healthy.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal coolant leak — fire risk (2011-2017 diesel models) Critical - verify completed
High-pressure fuel pump failure — loss of propulsion (2013-2016 N57T models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (applicable model years vary by market) Verify with VIN
The EGR cooler recall is particularly critical as it involves fire risk. BMW has expanded this recall multiple times since 2018. Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recall campaigns have been completed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used F10 525d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
Recall repairs Free regardless of age or mileage
All BMW F10 525d models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Recall repairs (EGR cooler, fuel pump) remain free of charge regardless of vehicle age. Extended warranty packages are available through BMW dealers and third-party providers, though pre-existing conditions will typically be excluded.
