The E60 525i is BMW's mid-range executive saloon from the Bangle era, available with three naturally aspirated inline-six engines across its 2003-2010 production run. The M54 (2003-2005), N52 (2005-2007), and N53 (2007-2010, European markets) are all considered reliable by BMW standards, with many examples exceeding 250,000 km. Main ownership concerns center on the E60 platform itself: aging iDrive electronics, cooling system components on the N52, and direct injection fuel system issues on the N53.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engines on an aging platform
The M54, N52, and N53 inline-sixes are fundamentally sound engines with many examples reaching 250,000+ km. The primary ownership risks come from the E60 platform itself: cooling system components (especially the N52 electric water pump), aging first-generation iDrive electronics, and oil leaks from multiple gasket points. The N53 variant adds direct injection fuel system concerns. Manual transmission cars avoid the ZF mechatronics risk entirely. With a complete service history and proactive cooling system maintenance, the 525i can be a reliable and enjoyable ownership experience.
