BMW parts cost around €300-400 for the housing; independent shops charge €800-1,200 total, while dealers quote €1,500-2,500. A US class-action lawsuit has been filed over this defect in B46/B48/B58 engines. Upgrading to an aluminium aftermarket housing during repair is recommended to prevent recurrence.

Many F44 M235i owners report a rattling noise from the turbocharger area, most noticeable during light to medium throttle as the engine warms up. BMW published a PuMA technical update acknowledging play in the turbocharger wastegate linkage. A permanent factory solution has been slow to materialise, and many dealers classify the noise as within acceptable limits. Some dealers have replaced the turbocharger entirely under warranty. Out of warranty, turbo replacement costs €1,500-2,000. If the noise is purely cosmetic (no boost loss or fault codes), some owners choose to live with it. However, if accompanied by reduced boost or check engine lights, the turbo should be replaced.

The B48 valve cover gasket is a common wear item that begins leaking around 80,000-100,000 km. The first symptom is usually a burning oil smell as oil seeps onto hot exhaust components. The gasket itself costs only €30-40, but the repair involves removing ignition coils, injectors, and multiple electrical connections. Independent shops typically charge €600-800 including parts; BMW dealers quote €900-1,200. Not an urgent failure, but should be addressed to prevent oil contamination of other components and reduce fire risk.

A rigid plastic bleed line connects the cylinder head to the coolant expansion tank. Positioned near the turbocharger, it undergoes extreme thermal cycling and eventually becomes brittle, snapping cleanly. This causes intermittent coolant loss without a visible puddle, as the leak can evaporate on hot engine surfaces. Symptoms include dropping coolant levels, warning lights, and occasionally a faint sweet smell. The part is inexpensive (€30-50) but labour adds up due to access. The B48 uses an electric water pump with an integrated thermostat housing. The pump's internal seals and bearings degrade over time, typically failing between 100,000 and 150,000 km. Symptoms include coolant warning lights, engine overheating, or poor cabin heating in winter. The integrated design means the entire pump-thermostat assembly must be replaced. Parts cost €350-500; total repair is €600-900 at an independent shop, up to €1,400 at a BMW dealer. Proactive replacement during other cooling system work is advisable once the car exceeds 100,000 km.

BMW uses a rigid plastic charge pipe connecting the turbocharger to the intercooler. Under high boost pressure, especially in hot weather or during spirited driving, this pipe can crack or burst. Symptoms are dramatic: a loud pop, immediate loss of power, and a drivetrain malfunction warning. The OEM replacement is another plastic unit (€100-150). Like all direct-injection petrol engines, the B48 accumulates carbon deposits on the intake valves because fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder rather than washing over the valves. The M235i's higher boost and power output can accelerate this process. Symptoms develop gradually: rough idle, slight hesitation, reduced fuel economy, and eventual misfires. Walnut shell blasting is the standard cleaning method, recommended around 80,000-100,000 km. Cost is €400-800 depending on the shop. Some F44 owners report the iDrive 7.0 system restarting without input. The screen goes black, audio stops, and navigation disappears for 10-15 seconds before rebooting.
