Common Problems
Reliable for a performance compact, but B48 weak points need monitoring
The M235i Gran Coupe F44 has a solid reliability reputation overall, with no catastrophic engine or gearbox failures widely reported. The B48 is fundamentally durable and many examples reach 150,000+ km without major issues. However, the oil filter housing, wastegate rattle, and cooling system components are documented weak points that surface on higher-mileage cars. The Aisin 8-speed automatic has proven dependable with no widespread failure pattern. Keeping to shorter oil change intervals (10,000-12,000 km rather than BMW's recommended long intervals) significantly helps prevent timing chain wear and oil system issues. The xDrive system has been reliable on this platform.
