BMW's well-documented EGR cooler weakness on modern diesels: internal coolant seepage mixes with soot deposits in the intake, leading to white exhaust smoke, rough idling, limp mode and in rare cases smouldering particles that can melt the intake manifold. The original 2018 recall (NHTSA 18V-755) targeted N47/N57 engines, with later extensions widening the scope. While the B57 in the X4 G02 was less affected than the older N57, BMW issued additional EGR-related service campaigns for 2018-2020 builds. Replacement is around €1,200-1,800 at independents and €2,200-2,800 at dealers when the intake manifold also needs replacing. Verify with VIN before purchase.

The B57 diesel particulate filter needs sustained motorway driving to regenerate. Owners doing mostly short urban trips report clogging between 60,000-100,000 km. Symptoms include warning lights, limp mode, and reduced economy. Forced regeneration at a specialist costs €100-200 if caught early. If saturated, professional cleaning is €400-700; full replacement runs €1,500-2,500. The X4's heavier kerb weight and AWD drivetrain put slightly more load on the filter than a 320d. Best avoided by buyers who can guarantee at least one 30-minute motorway run per week.

All modern BMW diesels including the B57 use plastic swirl flaps on a long rod inside the intake manifold. Vibration over time wears the flap pivots, and soot accumulates around them. Symptoms appear gradually after 100,000-150,000 km: rough idle, lower power, EML/limp mode and swirl flap fault codes. Many specialists recommend a delete/blanking kit (€200-400 parts plus labour) as a permanent fix. Full intake manifold replacement with new swirl flaps costs €1,200-1,800 at dealers. Cleaning service alone is €600-900 if flaps are still healthy.

The ZF 8HP gearbox in the X4 30d is fundamentally a strong unit but BMW's so-called 'lifetime fluid' policy contributes to slow degradation. Owners typically notice a faint vibration or rumble at 80-100 km/h under light throttle from 70,000-90,000 km onwards, caused by torque converter clutch slip. Preventive ZF fluid and filter service (€300-450 at specialists) usually resolves it. If left, mechatronic valve body or full rebuild is needed (€1,800-3,500). Insist on seeing a transmission fluid service in history at or before 80,000 km.

The power tailgate is one of the more frequently reported gripes on G02 X4 forums. Failure modes include tailgate not closing fully, intermittent operation, struts losing tension causing the tailgate to drop, and outright motor failure. A single strut replacement is €150-250; full electric motor module is €500-900 at a dealer. Many independents can refurbish for €350-500. Test thoroughly during inspection: open and close several times from both the key fob and dash button.

The 2020 LCI facelift introduced a 48V mild hybrid system with a belt-driven starter-generator. Owners on BMW forums report '48V supply error' messages and start-stop failures, sometimes accompanied by drivetrain warnings. The BSG unit itself is around €1,200-1,800 plus labour to replace. Some failures trace back to the DC-DC converter or 48V lithium battery rather than the BSG itself. Pre-2020 X4 30d cars do not have this system. Check for 48V or hybrid-related fault codes on a diagnostic scan.

The X4 G02 ships with 19-21 inch run-flat tyres that, combined with the firm M Sport suspension popular on this model, transmit harshness into the chassis. Front control arm bushings and rear ball joints typically need attention by 100,000-130,000 km, especially on cars driven on poor road surfaces. A full set of run-flats costs €900-1,400; control arm bushings €400-700 per axle at an independent. Many owners switch to standard tyres at first replacement for comfort and longer suspension life.
