BMW's first coupe-SUV, the X4 F26, shares its underpinnings with the X3 F25 and pairs the proven N57 inline-six turbodiesel with xDrive all-wheel drive and the ZF 8-speed automatic. The 258 hp and 560 Nm make it genuinely brisk (0-100 in 5.8 seconds) while returning 6-7 l/100 km on the motorway. The N57 single-turbo is regarded as one of BMW's most durable diesel engines, and examples exceeding 250,000 km without major powertrain issues exist. The coupe roofline does reduce boot space compared to the X3.· more· less

Buy if: You want a sporty-looking diesel SUV with strong straight-line performance and proven mechanicals, and can verify EGR cooler recall status and service history.
Avoid if: You mainly do short urban trips (DPF and EGR clogging), or cannot budget for potential timing chain and transfer case repairs on a high-mileage example.

Common Problems
Robust diesel engine, but ageing emissions components and xDrive add costs
The N57 inline-six is one of BMW's most durable diesel engines, and many X4 F26 30d examples exceed 200,000 km without major powertrain problems when properly maintained. The main ownership risks centre on emissions-related components (EGR cooler recall, DPF clogging, swirl flap deterioration) and the xDrive transfer case actuator on higher-mileage cars. Oil leaks from gaskets become increasingly likely beyond 100,000 km. Preventive swirl flap blanking and diligent service history (including transfer case fluid changes) significantly reduce the risk profile. Verifying the EGR cooler recall is the single most important check before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler fire risk (N57 diesel, 2013-2018 production) Critical - verify completed
Electronic Power Steering (EPS) control unit not to specification (2014-2016 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2014-2018 production) Verify completed
The EGR cooler recall is the most important check for any N57 diesel BMW. Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Ensure the EGR cooler was replaced with the updated design part, not simply repaired.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F26 X4 models
Extended warranty Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2018 cars until 2026-2030
All BMW X4 F26 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, particularly for pre-existing oil leaks, transfer case issues, and DPF problems. BMW's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active depending on production date.
