The four-cylinder alternative in BMW's retractable hardtop roadster. The N20-powered sDrive28i replaced the naturally aspirated inline-six in the E89 lineup from 2012, delivering 245 hp through a single twin-scroll turbo. Available with a 6-speed manual, 6-speed auto, or 8-speed auto (from 2014 LCI), it combines respectable straight-line performance with lower fuel consumption than the six-cylinder variants. The retractable hardtop offers coupe-like weather protection but adds mechanical complexity that demands attention.· more· less

Lower running costs than 6-cylinder Z4 Retractable hardtop, all-weather usable
Pre-2015 timing chain guide weakness Hardtop hydraulics can fail expensively
Buy if: You want a hardtop roadster with reasonable running costs and can find a 2015+ model or one with documented timing chain service.
Avoid if: You are looking at a pre-2015 car with no timing chain service history, or you need truly low-maintenance ownership.

Common Problems
Simpler than the inline-6 variants, but timing chain and leaks need monitoring
The N20-powered Z4 sDrive28i is significantly less complex (and less expensive to maintain) than the N54-powered sDrive35i. The main concern is the timing chain guide issue on pre-2015 engines, which can cause catastrophic engine damage if missed. Oil leaks from the filter housing and valve cover are very common on higher-mileage examples but are manageable repairs. The E89-specific retractable hardtop and boot water ingress affect all variants regardless of engine. Prioritize cars with documented timing chain service (for pre-2015) or late-production 2015-2016 models with redesigned guides, and verify all recalls have been completed.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Water pump electrical connector fire risk (2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, NHTSA 24V-608) Critical - verify completed
Brake vacuum pump oil starvation (2012-2014 Z4 sDrive28i, production May 2012-Aug 2013) Verify completed
VANOS bolt failure (2010-2012 Z4 models with inline-6 engine, N52 only) Not applicable
Takata airbag inflator (various production years) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The water pump connector recall (24V-608) is particularly important as it addresses a fire risk. The brake vacuum pump recall affects early 2012-2013 production cars. The VANOS bolt recall only applies to six-cylinder models and does not affect the sDrive28i.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E89 Z4 models
N20 timing chain Customer Care Program (7 years / 120,000 km) Expired on most models; verify with VIN
Thermostat extended warranty (10 years / 190,000 km) May still apply for late 2015-2016 production
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply for 2014-2016 models
All E89 Z4 sDrive28i models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The N20 timing chain Customer Care Program has expired on most cars but verify with BMW using the VIN. Late production 2015-2016 models may still have some extended warranty coverage on the thermostat. Budget for all maintenance and repairs without warranty coverage.
