The F15 X5 xDrive35i pairs BMW's proven N55 turbocharged inline-six with the well-regarded ZF 8HP automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. It is the petrol alternative for buyers who want the X5's motorway refinement without a diesel. The N55 is a respectable unit that can exceed 200,000 km, though it demands attention to cooling system components, oil seals, and the charge pipe. The 2016-2018 facelift models are generally regarded as the most sorted examples.· more· less

Buy if: You want a powerful petrol luxury SUV for long-distance use and can budget for BMW-level repair costs when seals and cooling parts need attention.
Avoid if: You want low-maintenance ownership or plan to keep annual mileage below 10,000 km (short trips accelerate carbon buildup and cooling issues).

Common Problems
Capable engine, but BMW SUV complexity requires proactive maintenance
The N55 inline-six is a solid engine that can exceed 200,000 km with proper care, and the ZF 8HP automatic is well-regarded across the industry. However, the F15 X5 is a complex vehicle with xDrive, optional air suspension, and numerous electronic systems that all require attention. Oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are widespread on cars beyond 80,000 km and should be expected rather than feared. The cooling system (water pump and thermostat) is the most critical area to monitor, as sudden pump failure can lead to overheating and expensive secondary damage. The 2016-2018 models are generally the most reliable examples.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Driver airbag inflator defect (2014-2015 models, improper weld on inflator housing) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator degradation (select 2013-2018 models) Verify with VIN
Starter relay water corrosion (2015-2018 models, water can enter starter relay causing failure to start) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The airbag recalls are safety-critical. Unlike the diesel F15 variants, the xDrive35i is not affected by the EGR cooler fire recall. Always verify recall status through the official BMW recall portal using the 17-digit VIN.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F15 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2018 models
Extended warranty options BMW Guarantee or third-party available
All F15 X5 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW offered a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016 on new cars, so late 2016-2018 models may have had 3 years originally. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer examples. Third-party warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-wear items.
