When replacing the HPFP, the camshaft lobe should also be inspected for wear, as a worn lobe will destroy the new pump quickly. An updated Bosch pump design is available. Replacement cost at an independent specialist: 600-900 euros. At a BMW dealer: 1,000-1,500 euros. A DME software update is required after replacement.

Timing chain guides are the main concern, but manageable overall

The N20 engine in the X1 E84 sDrive20i has a well-documented timing chain guide defect on pre-2015 production models that BMW acknowledged through revised components and a class action settlement. Cars built from January 2015 onward received redesigned guides and have a much better track record.
