The first fully electric 5 Series Touring, built on BMW's CLAR platform with dual motors producing 394 hp and 590 Nm through all four wheels. The 81.2 kWh usable battery delivers around 420-440 km of real-world range and charges at up to 206 kW DC. Spacious (570-1,700 litres of cargo), refined, and quick, it competes with the Mercedes EQE estate and the Audi A6 e-tron Avant. Production started in spring 2024, so long-term data is limited, but the 5th-gen eDrive powertrain is shared with the i4 and iX, providing a broader reliability picture.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid EV drivetrain, but many early-life recalls require careful verification
The i5 Touring xDrive40 benefits from BMW's proven 5th-generation eDrive powertrain, shared with the i4 and iX. The electric motors and battery pack have not shown systematic hardware failures, and the 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty covers the most expensive component. However, the i5 has accumulated a notable number of recalls in its first two years: integrated brake module, steering spindle, HV battery weld seams, A/C wiring harness fire risk, and electric drive unit software. All are repaired free of charge, but used buyers must verify every campaign is complete. Day-to-day, the most common complaints are software instability and charging schedule glitches rather than mechanical failures. The coolant changeover valve and CCU are the main out-of-warranty risks shared with other 5th-gen eDrive models.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Integrated brake module servomotor weld failure (2024-2025 i5) Critical - verify completed
Steering spindle double universal joint (June-July 2024 production) Critical - verify completed
High-voltage battery weld seam defect (December 2023 production, eDrive40 only) Verify if applicable
A/C wiring harness fire risk during cabin filter replacement (2024-2026) Critical - verify completed
Electric drive unit software shutdown (2024 i5) Verify completed
CCU combined charging unit manufacturing defect (2022-2023 production, check applicability) Verify if applicable
The BMW i5 has had an unusually high number of recalls for a car this new. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify every recall campaign has been completed. Pay particular attention to the brake module and steering spindle recalls, which are safety-critical. The A/C wiring harness recall addresses a fire risk and should not be deferred.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) 2024 models: warranty may still be active until 2027
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km with 70% capacity guarantee
Rust perforation warranty 12 years
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers (BMW Extended Warranty)
Most 2024 i5 Touring models are still within BMW's 3-year factory warranty (extended from 2 years since November 2016). The high-voltage battery has a separate 8-year / 160,000 km warranty that is transferable to subsequent owners. For used buyers, check the exact warranty expiry date based on first registration. Extended warranty can be purchased through BMW dealers.
