Premium plug-in hybrid SUV combining BMW's well-regarded B58 inline-6 with a 24 kWh battery and electric motor for around 70-85 km of electric range. Positioned as a long-range commuter that can run electric for daily trips and petrol for road trips. Strong drivetrain on paper, but PHEV complexity adds repair pathways the diesel and petrol X5 variants do not have. The 2020-2021 high-voltage battery recall and known air suspension and transfer case issues are the main concerns when shopping used.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid engine, but PHEV system and air suspension drive most costs
The B58 inline-6 at the heart of the 45e is one of BMW's most respected modern engines and rarely the source of expensive repairs at moderate mileage. Most ownership risk on the 45e comes from the hybrid drivetrain (battery recall, gradual capacity loss), the air suspension (a known G05 weak point), and the heavy SUV consumables. A car with documented recall completion, fresh transfer case fluid, and original or replaced air suspension under 100,000 km is a much safer bet than a higher-mileage example with unknown service records.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
High-voltage battery short-circuit risk - welding debris (2020-2021 production) Critical - verify completed
Seat belt automatic tensioner (selected 2019-2021 G05) Verify completed
Tail light circuit board (selected 2019-2020 G05) Verify completed
Backup camera display (iDrive 7 software, 2019-2020) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The high-voltage battery recall is the most important: affected cars must not be charged until the recall work is performed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used 45e cars
High-voltage battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Active on most cars; verify by build date
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Likely still active
BMW extended warranty (Premium Selection) Available through BMW dealers
The 8-year/160,000 km high-voltage battery warranty is the most valuable remaining coverage on a used 45e and applies to capacity loss below 70%. Confirm coverage status with VIN before purchase.
