BMW X3 xDrive20d F25

2010-2017Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2010-2017 · 2.0L N47/B47 4-cylinder turbodiesel (184-190 hp) with xDrive AWD

The second-generation X3 established BMW's compact SUV as a genuine premium alternative to the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. The xDrive20d is the volume seller across Europe, pairing a four-cylinder turbodiesel with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the ZF 8-speed automatic. Pre-LCI models (2010-2014) use the N47 engine at 184 hp, while the 2014 facelift introduced the improved B47 with 190 hp. This engine distinction is the most important reliability factor for any buyer.

Strong diesel economy (5.5-6.5 l/100 km) Refined ZF 8-speed automatic
N47 timing chain risk (pre-2014) EGR cooler fire recall on all cars
Buy if: You want a practical diesel SUV with AWD and can find a post-2014 LCI with B47 engine, or a pre-LCI with documented short oil change intervals and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has cold-start rattle, no service history, or was primarily used for short urban trips without regular highway driving.

Common Problems
Engine generation is the key reliability factor
The BMW X3 F25 xDrive20d straddles two different reliability profiles. Pre-2014 LCI models with the N47 engine carry the well-documented timing chain risk and swirl flap concerns, making thorough inspection essential. Post-2014 LCI models with the B47 engine are significantly more reliable, with the chain relocated to the front and improved intake components. Both engines share the EGR cooler recall (verify completion before purchase), DPF sensitivity to short trips, and the very common steering rack knocking. The xDrive system adds the transfer case actuator as a unique weak point compared to rear-drive BMW sedans. With proper maintenance and regular highway driving, the B47 xDrive20d is a dependable ownership proposition.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (diesel models, expanded multiple times since 2018) Critical - verify completed
Water pump electrical connector fire risk (2013-2017 models) Verify completed
ISOFIX child seat bracket failure (built through April 2016) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2011-2017 models, multiple rounds) Verify completed
Vacuum pump brake assist failure (built Nov 2012-Jul 2013) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical and has been expanded several times since 2018. Even if a previous EGR repair was done, BMW may have since extended the recall scope. The Takata airbag campaign is an ongoing global recall that has been issued in multiple rounds.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used F25 X3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models until 2026-2029
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F25 X3 models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, but only very late-production F25s (2017) would have benefited, and even those have now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions like timing chain noise or DPF issues.

↔ Also consider

BMW X3 G01 xDrive20d 2017-2023 Successor with B47 engine only. No timing chain risk but more complex electronics and higher running costs. AdBlue system adds a new failure point. Volkswagen Tiguan Mk2 2.0 TDI 2016-2024 Proven EA288 diesel with no timing chain risk. Lower repair costs but front-wheel-biased Haldex AWD rather than BMW's permanent xDrive. Volvo XC60 D5 Mk1 2008-2017 Robust 5-cylinder diesel with AWD. Angle gear and Haldex servicing often neglected. Similar overall cost profile but timing belt adds to fixed costs. BMW 320d F30 2012-2019 Same N47/B47 engines without xDrive complexity. Identical timing chain and EGR risks but no transfer case to worry about. Lower running costs overall. BMW 520d F10 2010-2017 Same N47/B47 engines in a larger sedan. Identical engine reliability profile. Rear-wheel drive only on most variants, so no transfer case risk.
