2017-2024 · 2.0L B47D20 (190 hp) 4-cylinder turbodiesel

The G01-generation X3 brought BMW's mid-size SUV onto the CLAR platform, with a significant weight reduction and refinement upgrade over the F25. The xDrive20d pairs the B47D20 four-cylinder turbodiesel with the proven ZF 8HP automatic and permanent xDrive all-wheel drive, producing 190 hp and 400 Nm. It is one of Europe's best-selling premium diesel SUVs, favoured by families and long-distance commuters for its motorway comfort and fuel economy around 6 l/100 km. A facelift (LCI) arrived in 2021 with updated iDrive 7, mild-hybrid assistance, and revised styling.

Proven B47 diesel with ZF 8HP Strong motorway fuel economy
EGR cooler recall needs checking xDrive transfer case can shudder
Buy if: You cover regular motorway distances, can verify all recalls completed, and the car has a documented service history including transfer case fluid changes.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips under 15 km (DPF and AdBlue problems) or want the simplest possible drivetrain without xDrive complexity.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel, but xDrive complexity and recalls need attention
The B47D20 in the G01 X3 is a proven and generally robust four-cylinder diesel, with many owners reporting trouble-free running well beyond 150,000 km. The timing chain was relocated to the front, largely resolving the N47's worst weakness. The ZF 8HP automatic is one of the most dependable transmissions available. Main ownership risks center on the diesel emissions equipment (EGR cooler recall, DPF, AdBlue system), the xDrive transfer case (shudder from worn clutch pack), and the cooling system. Two significant recalls (EGR cooler and starter motor) must be verified before purchase. Cars with regular motorway use, documented service history, matched tires, and confirmed recall completion are significantly lower-risk purchases.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (B47 diesel, recall expanded 2018-2024) Critical - verify completed
Starter motor overheating / fire risk (2017-2022 G01 models, recall 2025-2026) Critical - verify completed
Rear cargo rail detachment in rear crash (2017-2024, campaign expanded twice) Verify completed
Active air flap actuator defect (extended warranty 15 years / 150,000 miles) Check if applicable
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical safety item and has been expanded several times between 2018 and 2024 — even if a previous repair was performed, the scope may have since been extended. The starter motor recall from 2025-2026 is a newer campaign that also carries fire risk. The rear cargo rail recall required a second fix on some vehicles due to insufficient bolt length in the initial repair.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most used G01 X3 models
EGR cooler extended warranty 15 years from first registration
Active air flap extended warranty 15 years from first registration
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2017+ models until 2029+
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty (3 years total, no km limit) from November 2016, covering all G01 X3 models. Most used examples from 2017-2022 are now outside this warranty. LCI models from late 2021 onwards may still have some coverage. The EGR cooler and active air flaps each have separate 15-year extended warranties. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all G01 models.
