Volkswagen Touareg Mk2 3.0 TDI

2010-2018 (7P)Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2010-2018 (7P) · 3.0 V6 TDI (204-262 hp) turbocharged diesel, 8-speed Aisin automatic, permanent 4WD

Full-size luxury SUV that shares its platform with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. Refined on the road, genuinely capable off-road, and well-equipped even in base trim. The 3.0 V6 TDI provides strong torque and reasonable fuel economy, while the Aisin 8-speed automatic is one of the more reliable transmissions in this segment.

Robust Aisin 8-speed gearbox Strong towing and off-road ability
Expensive diesel emissions repairs Air suspension is costly to fix
Buy if: You need a capable towing vehicle with highway comfort and can budget for occasional expensive repairs typical of a large diesel SUV.
Avoid if: You primarily drive short urban trips (DPF and AdBlue issues) or need predictably low maintenance costs.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
€1,400 - €2,400/year
15,000 km/year
Fixed costs
€900-1,400
Risk buffer
€500-1,000
Common Problems
Capable and refined, but diesel emissions systems and air suspension drive repair costs
The 3.0 V6 TDI engine itself is robust and many examples exceed 250,000 km. The Aisin 8-speed automatic is reliable with proper fluid changes. However, the emissions equipment (EGR, DPF, AdBlue) and optional air suspension are the main cost centres. The 2013+ CNRB engine with simplified timing chain arrangement is preferable to the earlier CATA. Service history showing regular oil changes and evidence of highway driving significantly reduces risk. Budget for at least one major repair during a 5-year ownership period.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Dieselgate emissions software update (2009-2016 3.0 TDI models) Verify completed — mandatory
Brake pedal pivot pin securing clip (2011-2016 models) Verify completed
AdBlue tank heater element (2009-2016 TDI models) Verify completed — extended emissions warranty may apply
Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Dieselgate emissions recall is particularly important as it is mandatory in the EU. Some owners report drivability changes after the emissions fix, including increased fuel consumption and DEF usage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Touareg 7P models
Extended emissions warranty Check with VW — may cover AdBlue and emissions components
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active on 2014+ models
All Touareg 7P models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. However, the Dieselgate emissions settlement included extended warranties on certain emissions components. Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to determine if any extended coverage still applies to emissions-related parts such as the AdBlue heater, DPF, EGR valve, and NOx sensors.

Audi Q7 3.0 TDI (4M) 2015-present Newer platform with improved reliability. Lower risk profile but significantly higher purchase price. Volkswagen Tiguan Mk2 2.0 TDI 2016-present Cheaper to buy and maintain. No air suspension complexity. Less towing capacity and highway comfort.
