2014-2021Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2014-2021 · 2.1 OM651 / 2.0 OM654 4-cylinder turbodiesel (170-194 hp)

Europe's bestselling diesel executive sedan in its generation, the W205 C220d brought a lighter aluminium-hybrid body, a modern interior, and competitive fuel economy. Pre-facelift models (2014-2018) use the well-known 2.1-litre OM651 producing 170 hp, while the 2018 facelift introduced the newer 2.0-litre OM654 with 194 hp. Both engines are paired with the 9G-Tronic automatic. The OM651 is the more proven unit, while the OM654 is more efficient but has a shorter track record.

Efficient diesel, strong residuals Refined interior and ride quality
NOx sensor failures are widespread OM651 timing chain needs monitoring
Buy if: You want a refined diesel cruiser with strong fuel economy and can verify full service history and recall completion.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and AdBlue issues), or you cannot budget for Mercedes-level repair costs when components fail.

Common Problems
Reliable for its class, but diesel-specific systems need attention
The W205 C220d is a fundamentally solid car with a well-proven OM651 engine that can exceed 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks are concentrated in the emissions control systems (NOx sensors, EGR, DPF) and the timing chain. None of these are catastrophic if caught early, but neglected maintenance — especially short-trip-only driving — accelerates all of them. Cars with full Mercedes service history and regular highway use tend to be significantly less problematic.

Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014 Predecessor with same OM651 engine (from 2009). Similar diesel issues but adds electronic steering lock failures and rear subframe corrosion risk. BMW 320d F30 2012-2019 Direct competitor. Pre-2015 N47 engine has severe timing chain risk. Post-2015 B47 is more reliable than the OM651. EGR cooler fire recall affects all cars. Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8 2008-2015 Lower running costs and cheaper parts. Intake manifold flap failures (P2015) are common. Multitronic CVT is unreliable — manual is the safer choice. Mercedes-Benz C200 CGI W204 2007-2014 Previous generation petrol variant. Avoids diesel-specific issues but M271 engine has timing chain tensioner problems. Lower fuel economy. Mercedes-Benz A200 CDI W176 2012-2018 Same OM651 engine in a smaller package. Similar diesel issues but adds dual-clutch gearbox problems. Cheaper to buy but less refined.
