The first-generation XC60 was Volvo's best-selling model for years, and the T5 petrol brings two distinct engines to it. From 2012-2013, a 240 hp four-cylinder (B4204T7) was offered in FWD. From 2014 onwards, the revised 245 hp Drive-E four-cylinder (B4204T11) took over, available in both FWD and AWD. A 254 hp five-cylinder (B5254T12) was offered as T5 AWD in 2015-2016. All models pair with automatic gearboxes: an Aisin 8-speed on FWD Drive-E cars, an Aisin 6-speed on AWD five-cylinder models, or a Powershift DCT on some early FWD configurations.· more· less

Drive-E piston ring oil consumption Powershift DCT unreliable (if equipped)
Buy if: You want a safe, comfortable premium SUV with a petrol engine and can verify oil consumption history on Drive-E models (2014+) or find a 2015-2016 five-cylinder AWD.
Avoid if: The car is a pre-mid-2015 Drive-E with no oil consumption documentation, or has a Powershift DCT with signs of clutch judder.

Common Problems
Two different risk profiles depending on engine and gearbox
The XC60 T5 Mk1 ownership experience varies significantly depending on the specific combination of engine and gearbox. The 2015-2016 five-cylinder AWD models with the Aisin 6-speed automatic have the fewest concerns and are the most straightforward to own. The 2014-2017 Drive-E four-cylinder models require careful checks for the piston ring oil consumption issue (engine serial number is key) and, if FWD, may have the less reliable Powershift DCT. PCV system failure and water pump replacement are common to both engine types. Most issues are well-documented with established repair procedures. A complete service history with documented oil consumption checks is the single best indicator of future reliability.

The cooling system air pocket recall (2014-2017) and seat belt anchor cable recall (2009-2016) are particularly important for safety. For 2012-2016 Drive-E engines, ask specifically about the oil consumption Extended Warranty Programme eligibility.
