The first-generation Mini Countryman was Mini's first venture into the compact crossover segment, offering optional ALL4 all-wheel drive and a raised ride height. The Cooper S uses the 1.6-litre N18 turbocharged Prince engine co-developed with PSA, producing 184 hp. The N18 is a meaningful improvement over the earlier N14 but still carries known weak points around the timing chain, cooling system, and turbo wastegate.· more· less

Buy if: You want a distinctive compact crossover with spirited performance and can find a late-production (2014+) example with full service history and frequent oil changes.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (carbon buildup and turbo actuator issues) or cannot budget for surprise repairs at BMW/Mini labor rates.

Common Problems
Better than the R56, but still needs attentive ownership
The N18 engine in the R60 Countryman is a genuine improvement over the earlier N14, with reduced timing chain and fuel pump failures. However, the cooling system, turbo wastegate, and carbon buildup remain areas that need monitoring. The Countryman's extra weight accelerates clutch wear and puts more stress on the cooling system compared to the lighter R56 hatch. Late production cars (2014-2016) are generally more reliable. Frequent oil changes (every 8,000-10,000 km), using quality synthetic oil, and avoiding extended periods of gentle driving all help prevent the most common issues.
