The B9 A5 is a refined premium coupe and sportback built on the MLB Evo platform, shared with the A4 B9 and Q5. The EA288 2.0 TDI engine is a solid improvement over the EA189 predecessor, available in 150 hp and 190 hp variants. Most examples are equipped with the 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Interior quality is high, but the diesel emissions components and AdBlue system require attention.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but diesel emissions systems and gearbox need monitoring
The EA288 2.0 TDI in the B9 A5 is fundamentally a robust engine that can exceed 250,000 km with proper care. The main risk areas are the diesel emissions components (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) and the S-tronic automatic transmission. Early 2016-2018 models have more AdBlue system issues than the post-2019 facelift. Cars with complete service history, regular motorway use, and documented S-tronic oil changes are significantly more dependable. Avoid examples that have been used primarily for short urban trips.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Passenger airbag occupant detection system corrosion (2017-2018 models) Verify completed
TCM software update for S-tronic gearbox fault code clearing (recall 37P3, April 2024) Verify completed
Seat heater cable may disable passenger airbag (2018-2020 Sportback and Coupe) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (various production years) Verify completed
Contact Audi with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The TCM software recall (37P3) is particularly important for S-tronic equipped cars, as unresolved fault codes may prevent passing vehicle inspections.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used B9 A5 models
Thermostat/water pump extended warranty 8 years from in-service date on some VINs
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2016+ models
Extended warranty Available through Audi dealers, priced individually
Most used Audi A5 B9 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Check with Audi whether the thermostat housing extended warranty applies to your specific VIN, as this can save a significant repair bill. The 12-year rust perforation warranty is still active on all B9 models.
