2000-2004 · 2.0 20V ALT (131 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

The B6 A4 2.0 is the entry-level petrol in Audi's second-generation A4, powered by the naturally aspirated 20-valve ALT engine producing 131 hp. It was only offered for a few years before being replaced by the 2.0 FSI, as the modest power output was considered underpowered for a car of this size. The engine itself is mechanically simple and robust, but the complex B6 chassis brings age-related costs that any buyer should budget for.

Simple, naturally aspirated engine Cheap parts, widely available
Multilink suspension wears costly Body corrosion on most survivors
Buy if: You want an affordable, comfortable sedan with a simple engine and can accept the age-related suspension and corrosion work that comes with any 20+ year old B6.
Avoid if: You want anything more than modest performance, or you cannot budget for front suspension and bodywork repairs on a car of this age.

Common Problems
Simple engine on an aging chassis
The ALT 2.0 engine is one of the most straightforward petrol units Audi offered in the B6 A4. It has no turbo, no direct injection, and no timing chain concerns. Most engine-related issues are limited to coil packs, oil consumption from aging seals, and cooling system plastics. The real costs come from the shared B6 chassis: the complex multilink front suspension, age-related corrosion, and the notoriously unreliable Multitronic CVT on automatic models. Manual gearbox and quattro Tiptronic versions are significantly more trouble-free. For a 20+ year old car, condition and maintenance history matter far more than mileage.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata NADI airbag inflator (2000-2001 production models) Verify completed
Rear axle eccentric bolt stress corrosion cracking (selected AWD models) Verify completed
Front seat backrest weld defect (selected 2001-2002 production) Verify completed
Contact an Audi dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important as it affects occupant safety. Given the age of these cars, some recalls may have been missed during previous ownership changes.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all B6 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all B6 models
Extended warranty availability Third-party only, very limited for 20+ year old cars
All Audi A4 B6 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party extended warranties for cars of this age are rare and typically expensive relative to the car's value. Budget for all repairs out of pocket.

↔ Also consider

Audi A4 1.9 TDI B6 2001-2004 Same chassis, diesel engine. The 1.9 TDI is more durable long-term but adds turbo and EGR concerns. No DPF is a plus for older diesels. BMW 320i E46 2000-2005 Direct competitor with smooth inline-6. Cooling system and VANOS need attention, but the engine is well-regarded for longevity. Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor W203 2000-2007 M271 timing chain and SAM module failures make the W203 riskier. Higher repair costs due to Mercedes parts pricing. Audi A4 2.0 TFSI B7 2004-2008 Successor with turbocharged direct-injection engine. Much more powerful but adds cam follower, carbon buildup, and diverter valve concerns. Audi A4 1.8T B6 2001-2004 Same chassis with turbocharged engine. More power but oil sludge and turbo failure risks that the naturally aspirated 2.0 avoids entirely.
