Ford Mondeo Mk5 2.0 TDCi

2014-2022Last updated: March 2026

2014-2022 · 2.0 TDCi Duratorq / EcoBlue (150-190 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

The last of the traditional European Mondeos, built from 2014 until production ended in March 2022 with no direct successor. Spacious, refined, and a comfortable motorway cruiser with the proven 2.0 TDCi diesel. The Duratorq engine is durable but surrounded by emissions equipment (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) that needs attention, particularly on short-trip cars. Facelift models from 2019 onward received the EcoBlue badge and minor refinements.

Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCi 2007-2014 Previous generation with same engine family. Simpler emissions system (no AdBlue) means fewer sensor headaches, but older platform with more suspension wear. Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI 2014-2023 Direct competitor with similar reliability profile. Passat has DPF and AdBlue issues too, plus oil consumption on some EA288 engines. Opel Insignia B 2.0 CDTI 2017-2022 Similar segment with generally good reliability. Insignia B has fewer emissions system complaints but smaller dealer network for parts. Ford S-Max Mk1 2.0 TDCi 2006-2015 Same engine, MPV body. Shares DMF and turbo concerns. S-Max adds rear suspension and sliding mechanism wear points. Peugeot 508 2.0 BlueHDi 2014-2018 French alternative with known injector and AdBlue issues. Higher overall repair costs than the Mondeo due to pricier PSA diesel parts.
Known Issues most common first
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €400 - 1,800
Diesel particulate filter clogs between 80,000-120,000 km, especially on cars used mainly for short urban trips · more· less
The DPF on the 2.0 TDCi requires regular motorway driving (20+ minutes above 80 km/h) to perform passive regeneration. Cars used predominantly for short trips accumulate soot faster than the system can burn off. Symptoms include the DPF warning light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption. A forced regeneration via diagnostics costs around 100-200 euros if the blockage is mild. Professional chemical cleaning runs 300-500 euros. If the filter is beyond cleaning, replacement costs 1,200-1,800 euros. This is the most common issue on Mondeo diesels that do mixed driving with a significant share of urban trips.
EGR valve carbon buildup €350 - 800
EGR valve sticks from carbon deposits, particularly on low-mileage or short-trip cars · more· less
The EGR valve accumulates carbon deposits over time, especially when the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature. Symptoms include rough idle, black smoke, loss of power, and the engine management light illuminating. On the Mk5, the EGR unit is more complex than earlier generations and harder to clean manually. Replacement of the EGR valve at an independent garage costs around 350-500 euros, while Ford dealers charge 600-800 euros. Some owners have the EGR cleaned rather than replaced, which is cheaper (150-250 euros) but may only last 20,000-30,000 km before carbon builds up again.
Turbo actuator failure €150 - 2,500
Electronic turbo actuator sticks or fails, causing limp mode and the glow plug warning light to flash · more· less
The electronic turbo actuator is a known weak point on the 2.0 TDCi. When it fails, the engine enters limp mode and the glow plug light flashes. Ford does not sell the actuator separately - the official fix is a complete turbo assembly replacement at 1,800-2,500 euros. However, specialist turbo repair shops can refurbish just the actuator for 150-300 euros with a lifetime warranty. Full turbo failure is rare on well-maintained engines but can occur due to oil starvation if service intervals are stretched. A reconditioned turbo with new actuator from a specialist costs around 800-1,200 euros fitted.
Dual mass flywheel and clutch wear €900 - 1,500
DMF wears out on higher-mileage cars, causing vibration at idle and rattling noise · more· less
The dual mass flywheel typically lasts 150,000-200,000 km on the 2.0 TDCi, but heavy urban driving or towing accelerates wear. Symptoms include a rattling or knocking noise at idle, vibration through the pedals, and eventually clutch slip. The DMF and clutch should be replaced together. At an independent garage, expect 900-1,200 euros for DMF, clutch kit, and labor. Ford dealers charge 1,200-1,500 euros. Some owners opt for a solid flywheel conversion (around 800 euros), which eliminates the DMF but increases drivetrain vibration and is louder.
AdBlue NOx sensor failure (post-2016 models) €400 - 900
NOx sensors fail on AdBlue-equipped models, triggering emissions warnings and restricted performance · more· less
Mondeo Mk5 models from late 2016 onward are fitted with AdBlue (SCR) systems for NOx reduction. The NOx sensors are known to fail, producing fault codes P2200 or P20EE and triggering a countdown message warning that the engine will not restart after a set distance. Each NOx sensor costs 300-400 euros, and there are typically two per vehicle. Diagnosis and reset require dealer-level equipment. Some owners report recurring sensor failures even after replacement. Total repair cost including diagnosis and labor runs 400-900 euros depending on whether one or both sensors need replacing.
Adaptive LED headlight malfunction €200 - 900
Adaptive LED headlights enter safe mode or switch off, with control module failure · more· less
Mondeo Mk5 models equipped with adaptive LED headlights can experience failures where the headlights enter safe mode, point downward, or switch off entirely. This is caused by a failing headlamp control module. Ford issued a recall for vehicles built October 2014 to December 2015 where a software error could cause headlamps to abruptly switch off at night. A replacement control module costs around 200 euros plus labor, while a complete headlight assembly runs 750-900 euros. Not all Mk5 models have adaptive LEDs - base models with halogen or standard LED headlights are unaffected.
Battery monitoring sensor fire risk (recall) €0 - 100
Battery acid leakage can cause copper sulphate buildup around BMS, creating a fire risk · more· less
Ford recalled approximately 322,000 Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy models built between February 2014 and February 2019 due to a potential fire risk. Battery acid can leak around the negative terminal, causing copper sulphate to accumulate on the battery monitoring sensor. This creates a low-resistance conductive path that can cause overheating and ignition. The remedy is installation of a fuse bridge, which is free under recall. However, some owners report increased battery drain after the recall fix. Always verify this recall has been completed before purchasing - check the VIN with Ford.
Reliable engine, but emissions and electronics need attention
The 2.0 TDCi Duratorq engine itself is robust and can cover 250,000+ km with proper maintenance. The main concerns are the emissions-related components surrounding it - DPF, EGR, turbo actuator, and AdBlue system on later models. Cars with regular motorway use and complete service histories are significantly less problematic than short-trip urban cars. The battery fire recall must be verified as completed on all 2014-2019 models. Manual gearbox versions are more reliable than PowerShift automatics.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 4 more checksShow less
  • Check for turbo boost pressure
During hard acceleration, the car should pull strongly without hesitation. Flashing glow plug light or limp mode indicates turbo actuator problems.
  • Test adaptive headlights (if equipped)
Turn the steering wheel fully in both directions with headlights on. The beam should follow the steering direction. Check dashboard for headlight warning messages.
  • Inspect for oil leaks underneath
Check around the high-pressure fuel pump area and crankshaft seal. Oil on the underside of the engine is common and should be investigated.
  • Check AdBlue system (post-2016 models)
Look for any AdBlue warnings on the dashboard. Ask about the AdBlue service history. NOx sensor failures will show countdown warnings.
