Volvo XC90 II D5 Mk2

2015-2024Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2015-2024 · 2.0 D5 (225-235 hp) 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel with PowerPulse, AWD

The second-generation XC90 brought Volvo back to the premium SUV forefront with Scandinavian design and a strong safety reputation. The D5 diesel uses Volvo's 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder VEA engine with PowerPulse technology for reduced turbo lag. Available exclusively with an 8-speed Aisin automatic and AWD, it was Volvo's flagship diesel SUV until diesel was dropped from the range in 2024.

Strong safety and comfort Efficient for a large SUV
PowerPulse hose failures Expensive dealer servicing
Buy if: You want a spacious, safe premium 7-seater diesel SUV and can find a 2018+ model with full Volvo service history.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR issues) or want low maintenance costs without dealer dependency.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
€1,300 - €2,100/year
15,000 km/year
Fixed costs
€800-1,200
Risk buffer
€500-900
Common Problems
Reliable engine core, but complex diesel systems need attention
The VEA D5 engine itself is mechanically robust, and high-mileage examples beyond 200,000 km exist. However, the supporting systems - PowerPulse, EGR, AdBlue, and DPF - require consistent maintenance and suitable driving patterns. Cars used primarily on motorways with full dealer service histories are significantly more reliable than those used for short urban trips. The 2018+ model years addressed many early Sensus software issues. Air suspension-equipped cars carry additional risk compared to standard spring models.

Seat belt locking retractor deactivation (2021 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The coolant bleeder hose recall on early 2016 models is particularly important due to fire risk.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used examples
Air suspension quality bulletin Extended to 7 years from delivery (check eligibility)
Extended warranty (Volvo Selekt) Available on approved used cars through Volvo dealers
All XC90 D5 models from 2015-2022 are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. If the car has rear air suspension, check whether Volvo's 7-year quality bulletin coverage still applies based on the delivery date. Volvo Selekt certified pre-owned vehicles come with an additional warranty.
