2017-present · 3.0 V6 TDI EA897evo (286 hp) with 48V mild hybrid and quattro AWD

Audi's flagship sedan on the MLB evo platform, combining the proven 3.0 V6 TDI with a 48V mild hybrid system and adaptive air suspension as standard. The 286 hp diesel delivers strong motorway performance and reasonable fuel economy for a car of this size. The D5 generation introduced a dual-touchscreen MMI system and extensive driver-assistance technology including LIDAR on higher trims. Facelifted in 2022 with minor styling and software updates.

Strong, proven V6 TDI engine Refined ride, exceptional comfort
48V BSG known failure point Air suspension expensive to repair
Buy if: You want a refined diesel luxury sedan for long-distance use and can budget for flagship-level repair costs when systems age.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips or cannot absorb surprise repair bills for air suspension, 48V electronics, or advanced sensor systems.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but flagship complexity adds costly failure points
The 3.0 V6 TDI engine itself is well-proven and capable of exceeding 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership concerns are not the engine but the flagship-level systems surrounding it: the 48V mild hybrid BSG, adaptive air suspension, dual-touchscreen MMI, and advanced LIDAR-based driver assistance. Each of these systems works well when functioning but can be expensive to repair. The BSG issue has been acknowledged by Audi with an extended warranty, and the engine's coolant valve and swirl flap issues are well-documented with established repair procedures. Long-distance motorway use suits this car best. Budget for occasional sensor recalibrations and suspension attention as the car ages past 100,000 km.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Belt starter generator (BSG) power transistor defect causing 48V system failure (2018-2021 models, service campaign) Verify completed
BSG moisture ingress causing short circuit and potential fire risk (2019-2020 models, recall 27H2) Verify completed
Emissions software update (3.0 TDI Euro 6, KBA-ordered recall for thermal window removal) Verify completed
Rearview camera display failure due to infotainment unit hardware fault (2021-2022 models) Verify completed
Rear seat belt automatic locking retractor early deactivation (2021 models) Verify completed
Engine control module connector sealing pin missing, potential moisture ingress (2019-2021 models) Verify completed
Contact an Audi dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The belt starter generator campaigns are particularly important, as Audi has extended warranty coverage to approximately 10 years from in-service date for this component. The KBA-ordered emissions software update is mandatory for all 3.0 TDI Euro 6 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on most used D5 models
BSG extended warranty Approximately 10 years from in-service date
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still active on 2017+ cars
Extended warranty (Audi Garantie) Available through Audi dealers
Most used A8 D5 models are outside the standard 2-year factory warranty. However, the belt starter generator has extended warranty coverage of approximately 10 years from the in-service date due to the known defect. The 12-year rust perforation warranty still applies to all D5 models. Audi offers extended warranty packages through dealers for cars up to 10 years old and 150,000 km.
