2008-2015 · 2.0 TDI CR (120-190 hp) EA189/EA288 4-cylinder turbodiesel

The B8 A4 with the 2.0 TDI common-rail engine is one of the most popular diesel executive sedans in Europe. Pre-facelift models (2008-2012) use the EA189 engine (CAGA 143 hp, CJCB 120 hp), while the B8.5 facelift (2012-2015) introduced the updated EA288 (CNHA 150 hp, CSUA 190 hp). Both are fundamentally solid engines capable of high mileages, and the common-rail design avoids the balance shaft oil pump failures that plagued older PD-era 2.0 TDIs.

Proven CR diesel, high mileage capable Widely available, cheap parts supply
Intake manifold flap wear (P2015) Multitronic CVT unreliable (if fitted)
Buy if: You want a refined, economical diesel cruiser with a manual gearbox and can verify the Dieselgate recall and timing belt service are completed.
Avoid if: You are looking at a Multitronic CVT automatic variant, or the car has been used exclusively for short urban trips (DPF and EGR concerns).

Common Problems
Solid engine, but gearbox choice matters significantly
The 2.0 TDI common-rail engine in the B8 A4 is fundamentally robust and regularly reaches 250,000+ km with proper servicing. The common-rail design avoids the catastrophic balance shaft oil pump failures of older PD-era 2.0 TDIs. Most issues are moderate-cost items that can be caught during inspection: intake manifold P2015, EGR clogging, and DPF health. The critical variable is the gearbox — manual and quattro automatic models are significantly more reliable than front-wheel-drive Multitronic CVT variants, which can require expensive repairs. Verify the Dieselgate recall has been completed and check for any post-update driveability complaints.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EA189 emissions defeat device software update (2.0 TDI models 2008-2015) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (selected 2008-2012 production) Verify completed
Coolant pump blockage risk (2013-2015 models with electric coolant pump) Verify completed
Front airbag deployment software fault (2013-2015 A4/S4) Verify completed
The Dieselgate emissions recall is particularly important — it is mandatory in the EU for all EA189 2.0 TDI engines. Some owners have reported slightly higher fuel consumption and occasional EGR issues following the software update. Contact Audi with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all B8 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on pre-2014 cars, may remain on 2014-2015 production
Extended warranty availability Third-party only for most B8 cars
All B8 A4 models are outside their original 2-year Audi factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to the latest B8.5 production (2014-2015). For older cars, all repairs are out of pocket. Third-party warranty providers exist but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-mileage drivetrains.

Audi A4 2.0 TFSI B8 2008-2015 Same platform, petrol turbo. Avoids all diesel-specific issues (DPF, EGR, injectors) but has its own oil consumption and timing chain concerns. BMW 320d F30 2012-2018 Key competitor. Pre-2015 N47 engine has notorious timing chain issues. Post-2015 B47 is more reliable but adds EGR cooler risk. Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014 Similar segment. OM651 has Delphi injector and timing chain issues. Higher risk profile overall than the B8 2.0 TDI. Audi A4 1.9 TDI B6 2001-2004 Much older but legendary 1.9 TDI PD engine. Simpler, no DPF, extremely durable. Far cheaper to run but showing its age. Audi A3 2.0 TDI 8V 2012-2020 Newer platform with similar EA288 engine. Adds DQ250/DQ381 DSG risk on automatics. Smaller but more modern interior.
