Audi e-tron 55 quattro

2019-2023Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2019-2023 · 95 kWh (86.5 usable) dual motor AWD (300 kW / 408 hp) electric SUV

Audi's first fully electric production car, built in Brussels on a modified MLB evo platform. The e-tron 55 uses a 95 kWh battery pack (86.5 kWh usable) with dual asynchronous motors for 300 kW and standard air suspension. Real-world range is around 300-350 km. Renamed Q8 e-tron for 2023 with a larger battery, the pre-facelift e-tron offers strong depreciation and a premium cabin but has some first-generation EV teething issues that buyers should verify before purchase.

Solid build quality and refinement Battery ages well with low degradation
Motor coolant seal can fail No EU motor warranty extension
Buy if: You want a refined premium electric SUV at a steep used discount and can verify the battery recall and motor condition before purchase.
Avoid if: You need maximum range or cannot budget for a potential motor replacement outside the standard 2-year EU warranty.

Common Problems
Solid EV platform with one serious known weakness
The Audi e-tron 55 is fundamentally well-built, with battery degradation data showing just 5-7% loss at 50,000-80,000 km. The motor coolant seal issue is the biggest concern: while it affects only around 2% of cars, the repair cost is severe (€7,000-10,000) and European buyers lack the extended motor warranty that US owners received. The LG battery recall, air suspension, and 12V drain issues are manageable if verified before purchase. Post-2021 production cars with Samsung batteries and updated seals are lower risk. Budget for the air suspension and 12V battery as recurring items, and verify all recall work before buying.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
93U9 - HV battery thermal overload risk, LG E61V modules (2019-2022 models built before March 2022) Critical - verify completed
93E8 - Charging socket seal water ingress into HV battery (2019 models) Critical - verify completed
Brake pedal input rod bolt connection to brake booster actuator (early 2019 models, 206 vehicles) Verify completed
Air suspension compressor control unit communication (pre-July 2019 builds, software update) Verify completed
Portable charging cable overheating risk (multiple Audi EV and PHEV models) Verify completed
The LG battery recall (93U9) is the most critical: verify with an Audi dealer using the VIN whether the car has LG or Samsung cells and whether the recall has been completed. Cars built from March 2022 onward with Samsung SDI cells are not affected. The 2019 charging socket recall should also be confirmed as completed on early-build cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on all used e-trons
HV battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Covers capacity below 70%. Check remaining coverage by VIN.
Motor warranty (EU) Standard 2 years only. No EU extension (US got 10 years / 190,000 km).
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active depending on build date
All used e-trons are outside the standard 2-year factory warranty. The HV battery retains 8-year / 160,000 km coverage against falling below 70% capacity. Critically, Audi extended the electric motor warranty to 10 years in the USA but this does not apply to European-market vehicles. Some owners have obtained goodwill motor repairs, but this is discretionary. Consider third-party EV warranty coverage if purchasing outside battery warranty.

↔ Also consider

Audi Q4 e-tron 50 quattro 2021-present Smaller MEB-platform sibling. Less range and power but significantly cheaper. No air suspension complexity. Different battery and motor architecture. Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC 2019-2023 Similar first-generation premium EV with comparable issues. EQC has its own motor coolant seal recall and 12V drain problems. Both discontinued; EQC has slightly more recalls. Jaguar I-Pace EV400 2018-2024 More expensive to repair due to battery removal for heater and charger work. Battery fire recall is more critical. The e-tron is generally more dependable and has a stronger dealer network. BMW iX3 (G08) 2020-2025 Significantly cheaper to maintain with fewer documented issues. RWD only and less powerful, but no motor seal concerns and better dealer software update support. Hyundai Ioniq 5 77.4 kWh AWD 2021-present 800V ultra-fast charging is a major advantage. Has its own ICCU failure risk. Hyundai's 5-year warranty provides much longer coverage than Audi's 2 years.
