The best-selling car in Europe in 2023, the Model Y Long Range combines impressive electric range (up to 530 km WLTP) with strong dual-motor performance. Built at Fremont, Shanghai, and from March 2022 at Gigafactory Berlin. Mechanically simple as an EV, but the 2025/2026 German TUV report gave it the worst defect rate of any 2-3 year old car in a decade, primarily due to suspension and brake corrosion issues.

Common Problems
Supermanifold and compressor fail, most common on 2020-2022 models built before Berlin production · more· less
The Model Y heat pump system uses a supermanifold (octovalve) to manage thermal routing between battery, cabin, and motors. Early models (2020-2022) are particularly prone to compressor failure, often contaminating the entire system with metal debris, which requires full replacement of the compressor, supermanifold, and associated lines. Out of warranty, Tesla quotes approximately €3,500-4,500 for this repair in Europe. Tesla issued a software recall for heat pump defrosting logic affecting 2021-2022 models, but the hardware failure is separate. Models built at Gigafactory Berlin from 2022 onward use an improved supermanifold (V2) with better reliability. If buying a 2020-2021 car, verify heat pump operation in both heating and cooling modes.
Front upper control arm ball joints and rear traction arm bushings wear prematurely due to insufficient moisture protection · more· less
The primary reason for the Model Y's poor TUV performance. The German parts manufacturer Meyle investigated and found that Tesla's control arm ball joints have insufficient moisture protection, allowing water to displace grease and corrode the joint internally. The front upper control arm ball joint is the most common failure point. Symptoms include clunking over bumps, steering play, and knocking when turning at low speed. The rear traction arm bushings can also separate from the arm, causing creaking from the rear. 2021+ models use an updated rear traction arm design. Total replacement cost for a pair of front upper control arms is approximately €600-1,200 at an independent shop. If both front and rear need attention, expect €1,200-2,000. This is now one of the most common TUV failure items on the Model Y.
Discs corrode because regenerative braking means friction brakes are rarely used, especially in wet or salted climates · more· less
Because the Model Y recovers energy through regenerative braking, the physical brake discs and pads are used far less than in combustion cars. While this extends pad life to 100,000+ km, it also means the discs develop surface rust quickly, particularly in northern European climates with road salt. Tesla's Brake Disc Wiping feature applies light braking to clear surface moisture, but in practice, significant rust buildup still occurs. TUV inspectors in Germany frequently flag corroded brake discs on 2-3 year old Model Ys. Tesla recommends annual brake caliper cleaning and lubrication for salted-road areas. Replacement of discs and pads per axle costs approximately €400-700 at Tesla, or €300-500 at an independent EV specialist. If both axles need replacement, budget €600-1,200.
Water leaks into the rear trunk through faulty liftgate sealant and taillight gaskets on 2020-2023 cars · more· less
A widespread issue affecting Fremont and Austin-built Model Ys from 2020 to 2023. Water enters the trunk area through multiple potential paths: the liftgate sealant, taillight gaskets, and liftgate lamp connector gaskets. Tesla issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) recommending resealing with Teroson MS 660 sealant in Europe. However, many owners report the problem returning after the initial fix, and Tesla subsequently issued a revised procedure with improved sealant. If caught under warranty, the repair is free. Out of warranty, resealing costs approximately €200-500 depending on the extent of the work. Berlin-built cars from late 2022 onward appear to have improved sealing from factory.
Steering rack connector or motor fails, causing reduced or lost power steering assist · more· less
A less common but serious issue where the electronic power steering assist reduces or fails entirely. The root cause is typically water ingress into the steering rack connector, corroding the electrical connection. NHTSA opened an investigation into approximately 280,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for this issue. Symptoms include a steering warning on the touchscreen and progressively heavier steering. Tesla quotes approximately €3,000-5,000 for steering rack replacement in Europe, as the connector cannot be replaced separately. This is a safety-critical item. While relatively rare (estimated 2-5% of cars over their lifetime), the high repair cost makes it noteworthy.
Central touchscreen goes black or unresponsive, requiring MCU board or display replacement · more· less
Since the Model Y relies entirely on the central touchscreen for all vehicle controls including climate, mirrors, and glovebox access, a screen failure is particularly disruptive. The most common cause is the eMMC storage chip wearing out from excessive logging, though this mainly affected earlier Model 3 units and was largely resolved by 2020 with upgraded hardware. On Model Y, screen failures are less frequent but do occur, typically from main board component failure. Tesla charges approximately €2,000-3,000 for MCU replacement in Europe. Third-party repair services can often fix specific board-level issues for €500-1,000. This issue affects a small percentage of cars but is worth noting given the vehicle's total touchscreen dependency.
Auxiliary 12V battery fails, potentially leaving the car unresponsive and unable to open doors · more· less
The 12V auxiliary battery powers the car's electronic systems and door latches. When it fails, the car can become completely unresponsive, doors may not open, and the vehicle cannot be driven. Early Model Ys (2020-2021) used a lead-acid 12V battery with a typical lifespan of 3-4 years. From late 2021, Tesla switched to a lithium-ion 12V battery with significantly longer life. The car does display a warning before complete failure, but the window can be very short, sometimes just hours. Tesla mobile service replaces the 12V battery for approximately €100-150, or a DIY replacement costs roughly €80-120 for the lead-acid version. While inexpensive to fix, the failure mode of a completely immobilized car makes this a notable reliability concern.
Mechanically simple but suspension and build quality need attention
The Model Y's electric drivetrain is inherently reliable, with no engine, gearbox, or exhaust to fail. The 8-year battery and drive unit warranty covers the most expensive components. However, the TUV report revealing a 17.3% significant defect rate on 2-3 year old cars (nearly three times the average) cannot be ignored. Suspension components, brake disc corrosion, and build quality items like trunk sealing are the main concerns. Berlin-built cars from mid-2022 onward generally show better build quality. Budget for annual brake caliper servicing in salted-road climates and inspect suspension carefully before purchase.
