Volvo's flagship electric SUV, positioned as the XC90's successor with a fully electric drivetrain, LiDAR-based safety systems, and a 111 kWh battery offering around 580 km WLTP range. Built on the SPA2 platform shared with the Polestar 3, the Twin Motor variant delivers 300 kW (408 hp) through dual permanent-magnet synchronous motors with all-wheel drive. The EX90 launched with significant software immaturity, prompting Volvo to offer a free central computer upgrade to all 2025 models.· more· less

Common Problems
Immature software on solid hardware fundamentals
The EX90's powertrain (dual motors, 111 kWh battery, thermal management) has shown no systemic hardware defects so far. The overwhelming majority of reported problems are software-related: infotainment instability, digital key failures, charging module faults, and ADAS false alerts. Volvo has responded with a free core computer upgrade for all 2025 models and ongoing OTA updates. For used buyers, the critical question is whether the computer upgrade has been performed and which software version is installed. Early 2024 production cars on original software are substantially less reliable than late-2025 or 2026 builds with the latest updates. Budget for dealer diagnostic visits and be aware that this platform is still actively being refined.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Check remaining coverage based on registration date
High-voltage battery (8 years / 160,000 km) Covers capacity below 70% of original
Corrosion perforation warranty (12 years) Covers through-rust on body panels
Extended warranty Available through Volvo dealers, recommended for this model
The standard Volvo factory warranty is 2 years with no km limit. Given the EX90's documented software and hardware teething issues, purchasing an extended warranty or buying a car still under factory warranty is strongly advisable. The high-voltage battery warranty of 8 years / 160,000 km with 70% capacity guarantee applies regardless of ownership changes.
