The performance flagship of the first-generation XC60, the T6 uses Volvo's 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six (SI6, code B6304T4) producing 285-304 hp depending on model year. All T6 models came exclusively with Haldex-based AWD and the 6-speed Aisin TF-80SC automatic. The SI6 engine is widely regarded as one of Volvo's most durable powerplants, with many examples exceeding 250,000 km. Volvo discontinued this six-cylinder after 2014 for the XC60 as it moved to four-cylinder Drive-E engines.· more· less

Smooth, proven inline-six engine Timing chain, no belt service needed
Pre-2013 piston rings burn oil Thirsty: 11-13 L/100 km in real use
Buy if: You want a smooth six-cylinder SUV with AWD and can find a 2013+ model with full service history including Haldex and transmission fluid changes.
Avoid if: You want low running costs. The thirsty inline-six, premium fuel requirement, and Haldex AWD system mean higher ownership costs than four-cylinder alternatives.

Common Problems
Reliable inline-six, but pre-2013 engines and drivetrain need attention
The B6304T4 inline-six is widely considered one of Volvo's most robust engines, and many examples exceed 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The timing chain eliminates belt replacement concerns. However, pre-2013 engines have piston ring issues causing oil consumption, and the AWD drivetrain (Haldex coupling, angle gear, TF-80SC gearbox) requires proactive fluid servicing that is often neglected. The PCV oil trap is a near-certain maintenance item by 100,000 km. Choosing a 2013+ model with documented drivetrain fluid history significantly reduces ownership risk.
