Volvo's flagship estate on the SPA platform, combining Scandinavian design with a unique twin-charged powertrain. The T6 uses both a Roots-type supercharger for immediate low-end response and a turbocharger for top-end power, producing 320 hp from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Standard all-wheel drive and an Aisin 8-speed automatic complete the drivetrain. The T6 variant was produced until approximately 2021, when it was replaced by the B6 mild-hybrid with an electric supercharger.· more· less

Buy if: You want a fast, refined Scandinavian estate and can verify oil consumption history on 2016-2018 models or confirm the engine has revised pistons.
Avoid if: You want the simplest possible powertrain or cannot budget for supercharger repairs and potential piston ring work on early production engines.

Common Problems
Unique powertrain adds complexity beyond simpler turbo-only competitors
The twin-charged Drive-E engine is an engineering showpiece but introduces the supercharger as an additional wear item not found on simpler competitors like the BMW B48 or Mercedes M264. Early 2016-2018 engines carry the piston ring oil consumption risk, which Volvo acknowledged with an 8-year extended warranty. From mid-2016 onwards (engine number 1501327+), revised pistons largely resolved the issue. The SPA platform shares known weak points with other 90-series Volvos: parking brake wiring corrosion, Sensus infotainment quirks, and optional air suspension compressor failures. Cars with complete Volvo service history and post-2018 production dates present the best ownership prospects.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Emergency call system (VCM) software sending incorrect location (Sept 2016 - Oct 2018 production) Verify completed
SRS control unit mounting fault (Apr 2018 - Aug 2020 production) Verify completed
Low-pressure fuel pump fuse failure causing engine stall (2019-2020 models) Critical - verify completed
Curtain airbag mounting bolt failure risk (2017 models, selected VINs) Verify completed
Brake hydraulic unit welding defect affecting brake boost (2020-2021 models) Critical - verify completed
Automatic emergency braking software fault (2019-2020 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel pump and brake hydraulic unit recalls are safety-critical. Early production V90s (2016-2017) had the most recall activity overall.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used V90 T6 models
Oil consumption extended warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Check eligibility with Volvo using VIN (2016-2018 engines)
Air suspension compressor (7 years from delivery) Check eligibility for 2017-2020 models with air suspension
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all 2016+ V90 models
All V90 T6 models are outside the original 2-year factory warranty. For 2016-2018 models, the 8-year oil consumption extended warranty may still apply depending on the in-service date. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all V90s. Air suspension-equipped cars may still be covered under the 7-year compressor quality bulletin.
