Volvo's raised-ride-height V40 with the mid-range D3 diesel, competing with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The Cross Country variant adds 40 mm extra ground clearance, plastic body cladding, and larger wheels. Two different engines carry the D3 badge: a 5-cylinder D5204T (2013-2015) and a 4-cylinder VEA D4204T9 (2015-2019). The older five-pot is a smoother, more proven unit; the newer four-cylinder is more efficient but introduced early VEA teething issues including oil consumption and EGR cooler problems.· more· less

Buy if: You want a compact premium diesel with high ground clearance and can find a 5-cylinder model or a 2017+ VEA with revised pistons.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (DPF and EGR issues) or cannot verify whether a VEA model has the updated piston rings.

Common Problems
Engine variant determines the risk profile
The V40 Cross Country D3's reliability depends heavily on which engine is fitted. The 5-cylinder (2013-2015) is the more proven unit with a solid long-term track record, while the 4-cylinder VEA (2015-2019) brought improved fuel economy but also EGR cooler problems and the oil consumption issue on early builds. Door lock failures and coil spring breakage affect all V40 models regardless of engine. For VEA models, verify the engine number is above 1501327 (updated piston rings) and confirm the intake manifold recall has been completed. The Geartronic 6-speed automatic is generally reliable when fluid is changed regularly.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Intake manifold fire risk from carbon buildup on swirl flaps (VEA 4-cylinder diesel, 2014-2019) Critical - verify completed
Coolant bypass valve and exhaust manifold gasket causing coolant leak fire risk (2012-2015) Verify completed
Cooling system trapped air causing insufficient engine cooling (2015-2017) Verify completed
Fuel line cracking causing fuel leak in engine compartment (2015-2016 diesel models) Verify completed
Driver airbag inflator (ZF manufactured, selected 2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Contact a Volvo dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The intake manifold recall on VEA models is particularly critical as unrepaired vehicles present a fire risk. The fuel line recall applies to diesel models built between April 2015 and March 2016.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used V40 Cross Country D3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
Extended warranty availability Available through Volvo dealers and third-party providers
All used V40 Cross Country D3 models are outside their original 2-year Volvo factory warranty. Volvo's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer models. Volvo has historically provided goodwill contributions for certain known issues like EGR failures and door locks on lower-mileage cars. Always ask the dealer about any open recall work.
